HArveys Cinema Chairs. Modification. WARNING!!

Hi guys, I was going to add this post to the cinema seats thread, but its too important to be on page 16 or whatever!!

I got my chairs delivered on Dec 13th, to date they have been superb, not one fault and we all love them.

I got the letter a few weeks back like some did, saying to unplug them and not use the reclining mech until contacted. Two weeks pass, we get a phone call form the manufacturer, (Luna, although I now understand it is a co called Siren furniture in Nottingham). She said they would be getting local technicians to contact us about modifications, I asked the nature of the fault, she would not say.

About 10 days pass, I got a call form a firm of local techincians, or Upholstery specialists on Monday to say I was first on thelist, they were awaiting new transformers then they would come out Friday to fix the chairs. I pointed out there was nothing wrong with ours, but she said it was an update.
So he comes today at 3pm. I ask what he's got to do, its replacing some wires to the tranformer, with a new lead an plug socket system, which bolts to the inside side panel. If you look at the rear of the chairs, on the right hand lower panel, where the exisiting cable sneaks under the chair, this massive plug and socket is being placed there, held on with a copper pipe U clip, (I kid you not).
I am at owrk (at home) so pretty much leave him to it, he's a nice guy, worked for them for 7 years, seemed ot know what he was doing.
I help him back into position with the chairs, (all three) as he has had them on their sides to do the work.
I sign the paper to say work done, he has checked all the mechanisms work, by reclining them til the footstool comes out, BUT NOT A FULL RECLINE!!!!!!!!

So off he goes, about 5.15pm, over 2 hours he was here.

7pm comes, we pop in to watch JAG (!!missus likes the uniforms!) and sit in the newly modified chairs. Missus has part reclined hers, I recline mine, footstool out to 45 degrees and it stops. I curse, (perfect up til then of course!) go round the back and "its ok, its the new plug part of the new socket has come adrift.
So go back, continue to recline..............CRACK........(massive crack!) ***......!? I go back and see that as the chair reclines, there is a panel on the rear, the bit wiht the velcrow on the bottom to attach the flap that hangs down of the seat back. Well this panel moves forward as you recline, and after about half way, its HITS this new plug and socket now screwed on the inside right hand side panel........!!!!!!!! ***. On my chairs, its hit with such a purchase, it has snapped the panel that moves forward in half, longitudinally along the grain of the wood. The missus chair has scuffed it more gently, and it has bent the U pipeclipe to kingdome come, PULLING THE 240v WIRES INTO THE MECHANISM, (jammed in between two moving arms it was) as the pug and socket have been pulled out of position.......!
The third chair was untouched, so I got the video camera, and videoe'd it reclining showing the plug and socket effort being hit half way through and pulled forward out of position..........> I stopped before anything could brak or be damaged though.
Now the guy had to call his office to see how to fit it all, it appears my modifications were different to ones he had done before...........BUT come monday AM, these muppets are out on the road and may be comeing to a harvey cinema chair near you!!! PLEASE dont let them ruin and break your chairs like they have mine. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!

As for me, well I am off to Harveys first thing tomorrow to show them my video, and ask them how much money they or their supplier are going to give me so I dont send my video to Watchdog!! What a fookin joke......!! Perfect, no problems, "recall modification"...........fooked......!?!?! Now am i missing something here.......?!

Eeek, just posted in the other thread after worrying that I didn't get a letter about this.

Now I'm glad, but I think we really need to know the nature of this problem.

The guy form the upholstery firm called me on Saturday afternoon and was horrified. Apparently mine were the very first to be done in the whole country!! He came up on Sunday and disconnected the modification. To be fair he was totally gutted that they'd broke my chair!

Although he did not have a full toolkit, (he came in his car not van) I lent him some screws and a gun of gripfill(!!) and he stripped the back of my broken chair and gripfilled / screwed it all back together! although i am sure it will be pretty strong I really want them to try and fix it properly if they can.

Since Sunday I have heard nothing, so I chased them today from here in Germany.

The upholsterer said there are some modded parts coming, but they have not received anything for my chairs yet, just everyone elses!!
It will be at least three weeks before they can come back to me apparently!!

So I call the suppliers in Nottingham. They are aware of the problme I have had, but did not know it actually broke my chair! They said they were sympathetic bu that I would have to go back to Harveys as my contract is wiht them.........!! ***, Harveys never sent these guys to "fix" my chairs, the supplier did!! There was nowt wrong wiht my chairs I made no comlaints and had no problems before. Surely its the upholsterers and the suppliers that orgainsed this modification that have to put it right.......?!!?
Anyway she gave me the name and number for a customer relations manager at HArveys that apparently knows all about my unfortunate case. I call them, (by mobly form Stuttgart) and after 15 minutes in a queue, they answer to say they have never heard of this guy!!

So still no fixed chairs, and no one seemingly wants to know about it, 7 days after it happend. And guinea pig simch gets ruined chairs, just so all yours will be OK!! !

The king beyond

For waht it is worth i wouldn't bother ordering one mate they are not worth the hassel spend the extra money on a lazeeboy. If you can't aford one of those get a normal reclining sofa i wish i had.

Moving to Australia in about 12 weeks and if HArveys havn't sorted mine out by then i will be delivering them to their head office via the front window. May need some help lifting them but there are plenty of very unhappy customers out there.

I found Harvey's customer service to be very very poor, be warned, they eventually took my 3 leather sofas away, but theft their mark with two holes in the wall, they then denied all knowldge of doing this and would not pay up for the repair.

Finally got the modification done on Wednesday. Just a simple socket and chord. Apparently this is purely for safety reasons i.e. any pull on the power chord means the socket gives way and doesn't pull on the connection to the transformer. Took just 10 minutes on my single seater. They also asked if they could secure the control to the chair.
