AV rack with smoked/dark glass door?

I've been searching for a discreet 4/5 unit AV rack with a smoked glass door which would do a good job of hiding all the kit whilst letting the IR signals through.

No such luck. In fact, I'm having a hard time finding any racks with doors at all, let alone the kind of discreet smoked glass type I'm after.

Any ideas?

Ikea do really nice one like this with a dark grey smoked glass door. Very nice and not that expensive - about £60 I think...

For some reason it doesn't show on their website, but it is available in store. It is the same finish as this, but vertical with shelves: http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/store...61*15641*15962

Probs worth a look for the money...

Cheers for the reply, but I'm not overly taken with the Ikea unit. Not too keen on the legs or the sliding door.

Any swing door smoked glass racks out there?

I'm sure there must be a simple low cost rack in the style I'm after

Ikea Kaxas

Ectoplasm

In support of JasonJo's post (I can't see the link as it errors for me) but I assume its for the Kaxas unit.

I have one and am happy with it. Regarding your comment on the legs - I agree - so I ditched them! Left them off and fitted castors. Looks much better.

A thought

I did understand your post, but I wasn't keen on the idea of legs or a sliding door, which from your description I assumed the vertical style would have.

Seeing as the legs are optional I may consider this unit. How many shelves does it have, and what's the door like? I really can't be doing with a trip to Pikea and all the trampling through crowds it entails just to take a look...

It is a vertical unit with 4 or 5 shelves and a full height swing door - quite nice looking and cheap as chips compared to other AV units. I had the same though as above and considered removing the legs and replacing with castors.

Take a trip...you know you will love it

Maybe huntere can attach a photo??

Just what I wanted to hear, cheers

A photo would be excellent, even thinking about the idea of setting foot in that place again makes me spontaneously develop a fetish for imploding the craniums of dawdling fleece wearing housewife shoppers under the wheels of those BLOODY USELESS trolleys with NO SIDES OR PROPER HANDLES!!! Look what you've gone and done! AAAARGH!!!

Well I'm flattered you should ask......

Here are the pics.

I have both the horizontal Kaxas and the vertical. On both I took the horrid metal legs off.

I used to have the "kit" in the vertical one but since getting plasma now have it all under that on horizontal one. Use the vertical one for storage of CD etc.

2 pics - one with door open, one closed. Remotes all work fine with door closed.

The castors I got were 50mm and fitted EXACTLY into the holes that should have taken the metal frame Ikea ship - I got them at B&Q. Even the Ikea screws were perfect - couldn't have been simpler.

Also with the hardboard back, rather than use the panel pins that came with Ikea I got a bag of small screws and screwed that back on so it it could be easily chnaged for moving cables etc - also might be worth cutting back panel making it in sections - leaving it off is NOT an option or unit is too wobbly.

Anything else (and no I won't go to THAT shop for you - agree on sentiments!)

Sorry for PQ - phone camera

Thanks a lot for the pics, much appreciated

The vertical unit would have been perfect if not for the height, it's simply too tall. Gutted.

On a side note, how did you go about concealing your cables in the wall? What tools and process is involved? And have you routed the power cables behind the skirting board?

Cheers

A phrase to do with "moon and sticks" comes to mind!

If you have a search of the plasma forum there is a thread by Bix which shows how he did his - I basically followed that. My wall is exactly the same as his - plasterboard on dot and dab.

1 plumber, lots of blood sweat and tears, and a few hundred quid later...

Power wise I have and 8 way gang behind the low Kaxas - the power lead just runs along the bottom of the skirt tucked into the carpet.
