New Rack or Cabinet for HEAVY 36" CRT?

Hi Chaps,

I have a whopping Sony 36" CRT that weighs in at 100kg. I'm looking for a decent AV cabinet that will take this weight plus the weight of my other equipment (VCR, AMP, Xbox, DVD Player, Laserdisc Player Center Speaker).
Preferably, I'd to spend as little as possible for and also be able to have my centre speaker directly below the TV rather than perched on top.

My preference is for some kind of wooden cabinet with glass doors

Does something like this exist in budget land?

Thanks for your input

some of the ikea stands take 100kg. if you look at stands in general, most of them tell you the load they will take. if you then look at the manufacturers website of your tv you will find the weight of your tv

most stands will probably take a couple more kg than mentioned, just to be on the safe side. i doubt the weight of stuff on inside shelfs will make much difference unless you have a whole load of heavy stuff (ie. big amps) - a tip would be to put the heavy items on the bottom

i had a 32" widescreen crt which weighed a ton on an ikea av bench and it handled the weight no bother at all. obviously a 36" could be a lot heaver. i know compared to my 28" 4:3 crt the 32" was about 4 times as heavy, but the 32" was a FST type and a lot better quality. my 50" plasma is lighter than the 28"

my stand is from ikea and sounds just like what you are after, but i'm not sure what the name of it is as i got it second hand. i think my mate said it was about £80, but it is a fairly solid unit and doesn't look like cheap crap

actually thats the unit i have, it should do the trick. not sure the name of it. its on this thread so you could maybe ask the guy who posted it (the get your LCDs out thread)

get your lcds out for the lads!! (Don't quote with images!)

actually i just noticed the guy just replaced his 36" CRT with a lcd, so there you go, that unit does take a 36" CRT - it shouldn't be too hard to find on the ikea website, they only have so many AV units

if your unsure the make and model of your tv, google up a few other 36" crts and look up the weights from the manufacturers websites and you'll get a rough idea, so you can check the weight loads on units from ikea/argos/etc

Thanks for your input.

I already have the unit that you kindly attached a picture of. I had it in "Ye Olden Days" when I had a 28" sony sitting happily on top of it. It is now relegated to the spare room where it is full of CDs and bits 'n' bobs!

From memory, I think that Ikea said that the unit could take about 70kg. I just couldn't bring myself to try my 100kg TV (plus other stuff) on it.

If it were rated a being able to hold 90kg, I'd have probably given it a try; but, being there's a 30% difference, I think it's just that bit too risky.

But, if there is something very similar that will definitely take the weight, that'd be the thing I go for. Any suggestions?

Once again, thanks for your input.

i suggest if you can find the thing on the ikea site, see what weight it holds, and check the weight of the tv online, if it holds the weight then you already have a unit that will do the job. the unit seems like it will hold some weight, its fairly solid

the oppli seems to be a popular choice on this site, its a cracking price. as that says 70kg on the site and folks say it takes 100kg, then i'm sure the one i posted above, will take 100kg no bother.

you can always paint or stain it, although a pain in the arse. another tip is to turn the lights out. easy, cheap and effective!

Unique,

Hmmmmm, I don't know. I'd feel very uneasy about putting an £1800 TV on a unit that isn't 'officially' up to spec. I'm not sure about the other units' strength, but I don't fancy the DIY aspect of bolting two together.

I've checked in my TV's specs and it is 98kg. Most 36 inchers seem to be about 85ish.

I guess I'll have to buy a projector instead!

OOOPS
I've just been on the IKEA site. Well! they now seem to have quite a selection of units quite a few of which hold up to 100kg. I'm sure just a couple of kgs over won't be a problem!

I think I may have brave the most scary place on earth.

i'm sure ikea will play safe and rate lower than the tested weight, so people can't sue them when thier 36" crt smashes it to peices.

anyways if your insured and your tv does break, you might get some money towards a nice new plasma

i wouldnt risk putting a 100kg item on a rated 70kg oppli tho, but on a 100kg rated item it should be fine

Not cheap, but Stands Unique is just up your street. I have their High AV10 and you can get it with or without glass doors. My 75kg Tosh sits on top no problems and the stand itself will take 250kg of distributed weight. Here's a picture:

See here for their website: http://www.standsunique.com/productr.../hifi/av10.htm

I'd expect most dealers to give you 10% off if you ask. Happy hunting!

I use one of these with some minor modifications.
http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/store...61*15641*15962
I glued and screwed it when I put it together. Added some L brackets to the top and bottom to help strengthen it. I also used a X brace from IKEA shelving systems instead of the hardboard back so it's cooler inside and easier access.

I've got different stuff in it now but the same 70KG TV on top.

Yes I favour that one as well . What do you mean by a X brace btw?

It's a metal X with screw holes at each end from the IVAR storage range.
Cant't remember if I bought a 70cm or 100cm - buy both when you pick up the cabinet or measure the diagonal on the display unit. You need to go from just below the top corner to just above where the base connects at the bottom. Given the weight of your TV you might find one of each is a sensible precaution!

Cross-brace OBSERVATÖR £2.00

Why not have a chat with your local cabinet maker and see what can done for your budget. You will be suprised what can be done.

I had a custom made 11ft oak cabinet made for just over 1100.
