Thanks: Gave 1, Got 1
reinforcing existing TV unit?

Hi all, situation is as follows.

I've got a new wide TV unit that is only a few weeks old and it currently supports a 25" CRT.
I've also just taken delivery of a new 42" plasma with pedestal stand but having moved the plasma around a bit on the floor I'm sure that the TV unit would not like the weight of the plasma screen.
Rather than ditch the unit, I want to explore the posibility of reinforcing it in some way to prevent the wooden top panel from bowing or even failing.

Two ways spring to mind.
The first is to widen the central dividing panel and two end panels with MDF inserts so the load is transmitted to the floor via wider and stronger panels.
I could shape and stain the inserts so that wouldn't be obtrusive.

The other idea was to try and source a sheet of hardened safety glass with similar dimensions to the top of the unit which would again hopefully help to disperse the load more safely.

Do either of those ideas - or even a combination of the two - sound feasible to the more engineering inclined who browse here?

Thanks in advance for any input/advice that is forthcoming.
