OK after weeks of looking at stands to hold all my AV stuff there seems to be nothing that meets my requirments, SO I have decided to build one, NO!! I here you say, Well I am a carpenter by trade and have made many bits of furniture in the past, This is what I am making.

The unit will be LOW Level about 450mm high, It will measure about 1600mm across and 500mm deep, It will be split into three sections On the left hand side I will have 3 spaces in the middle 2 spaces and on the right 3 spaces, The middle section will hold the AMP at the bottom and the Center speaker at the top all other AV gear will be devided between the remaining 6 spaces on the left and right of it. The unit will be made of Tough Glass and 5th swedish redwood with round 32mm poles as spaces.

I hope this will be made for next week, Of course I will take a pic and see what you guys all think. Wish me luck!

Well I'm no carpenter, but I made something similar to your description about 3 years ago.
It cost me £40 to make (yes, out of chipboard, but it looks ok).

Its 173cm wide, 53cm deep, and 63cm high.
It holds everything including my KEF TDM23 Centre speaker with my TV perched on top. Its very strong.

Well I don`t know about doing it in chipboard, Might be ok for boxing in some pipes but as a bit of furniture I think a little bit to raw, Anyway Take a pic let us all have a look at it.

T too built my own cabinet as I couldnt find anything that did what I wanted without paying a massive amount of cash . I've always been fairly handy and when I got into it, it wasnt too difficult. Its built out of furniture board, available from most DIY stores. The board I used has a very nice real wood veneer finish. It holds all my components and has a reinforced base to hold my heavy power amps, it consists of six shelves side by side and has hidden spacing at the back to hide all my cableing

I have made my own AV stands since I was about 14 when I couldn't find something that would house my Aiwa music centre and my collection of Duran Duran and Madonna LPs...

Last one I made was for my Sony widescreen TV about 2 years ago which I had in the corner of the room.
I made it out of MDF and chrome tube and it cost about £60 all in.

Luckily, the Ikea Oppli fits the bill quite nicely now so the home made one got binned.

OK looks like i have started something here, Today I have Cramped together Small sections of 5th swedish redwood for the Base and Top section, I have also Cut all Light hardwood spaces to size and used my lathe to bore the correct size hole straight through the center, There was 24 peaces in total, Tomorrow will sand up all the timber and will pick up the 6mm Tough at beginning of week. I have a 4 tier HIFI setup for my Rega system, It was done in the same kind of way but used Stainless steel spaces instead of wood, Also NO glass it has 32mm thich timber to all sections, If anyone wants a look I can take a pic of that for the time being untill i have finished the AV unit. Anyway come on guys get those HOME BREW pics on here and let us all have a look.

Right Guys. I'm in - Can anyome point me in the direction of a seller of quality veneer (or real) maple borad to build with + shelves (for centre speaker).

Just been to pick up My Tough Glass, They have missed out one peace, Said it will ready for monday, Sorry about that out of my hands, But all else is finished on it, As soon as i have the glass NO more than a couple of hours to assemble and polish the solid wood, then i will take a pic.

Cricket, blimey, that looks really great. I built my self a flexi rack last year to house my av kit, but nowhere to the standard of that.

Great idea using the wood sheathing for the threaded rod. Does it come in lengths like that or did you have to drill out some dowel?

All Been made to certain lengths depending on what Gear is in your AV setup. So totally custom built for your needs. Here is the unit the right way up. All i need to do now is Wax it to my taste and put in my AV gear, I will take a final pic of it when all in position and complete.

Your design is very similar to mine except I used mdf for the shelves and chrome tube for the supports.
How is the lateral strenght?
Do the threaded rods give enough support to stop it moving side to side?
I guess the wooden sheaths give the extra stability needed?

Believe me, This is a Solid Job and I mean Solid, I have made lots of Cabinets, Tv`s, Hifi`s and Computer desks for People as a Paid job as I am Self Employed Carpenter, so really this was quite simple for me. I am looking forward putting everything together and taking a pic of it with the Plasma about it, So watch this space until them. But thanks for your comments about it.

Would you care to give an approximate cost of the materials, including any specialist cutting of the tempered glass, etc?
I'm guessing the glass was the most expensive part?

Presumably you will be putting some castors or feet on, or will you just leave the bottom shelf sitting on the floor?

If you look at AV4.Jpg, You will see the unit upside down in each corner you will see Cylinder rounded off adjustable feet (Not castors).The total cost was about £200 including the glass and Redwood, Not cheap but there again I wanted Something to Look VERY good in my living room, If I was going to make one for someone as a job, Then You would be looking as around £400 but remember that This would be Built to your own dimensions as a Peice of Bespoked Furniture.

As a self-build that's a very good price.
Even if it was made to order, £400 is still quite cheap considering, as you say, it would be bespoke.
