You can buy the battery clock inserts quite cheaply, and you can probably get hold of movie reels like that from ebay or similar cheaply too. I reckon it could be possible to make one for under £5 - I've boight some cheap clocks from the Pound Shop - 2 for £1, so you just need to find a suitable reel for under £4.

I'll see if I can come up with something now that that's given me an idea.

I've looked on ebay but only found suitable reels in the USA, I'll let you know when I come up with a result though.
