New cabinet

Well I eventually replaced my trusty old PDP-506XDE back in January with the KRP-600A.

To be honest, I was getting completely fed up with my old Ikea Besta furniture. Although it looked okay, as usual with most of their stuff it was ready for the skip after about 18mths. As it happens, the new amp I ordered was too deep to fit the old furniture so after a very long and fruitless search for something suitable I had this made. The unit is in solid English oak. It's wall mounted like the old Ikea units but is 650mm deep to give loads of room behind each device and 450mm high to give some decent space above. It's vented underneath along the full length with cable access between each section.

I don't seem to have any overheating issues at the moment but there's plenty of room at the rear to install a cooling system if I need to. The amp (LX81) is in the first section, SkyHD and receiver in the second, PS3 and bdp in the third and the SVS sub sits in the fourth. I use a 'lazy susan' under the amp for easy access to the back, the whole thing spins 360 inside the compartment with about 10mm to clear either side ... hadn't planned for that!

I've got the ethernet devices connected via a 3 port 85Mbps Homeplug linking to 3 x 1TB external hard drives in the office, which is where most of my media is stored.

Really happy with the chap who made it, excellent service for half what I was quoted initially. I've had a couple of things made in the past but his craftmanship is def the best I've seen. He even delivered and fitted in person!

It was around the £1200 mark, took about 5 weeks from when I emailed over the design. It would have been about £700-£800 in European oak, probably less if you go for a cheaper wood. I supplied the tinted glass and acoustic cloth but that was only about £60 in all.

Re: New cabinet

How does it attach to the wall? Must be some pretty damn strong connections, esp considering you've got your sub in there!

Re: New cabinet

Yep, I was pretty worried about that and had considered having a supporting leg or two underneath.

It's fine though, the carpenter even put his entire body weight on the front edge once it was up to prove to me!

He used his own custom design steel bracket attached to the back with 8 anchor bolts going into the brick.

Cheers, it actually turned out better than I'd hoped. I was pretty impressed with it, hence he's now making another smaller one and a coffee table to finish the room off
