Re: The Sony STR-DA2400ES Pre/Owners Discussion Thread *Part 2*

Jackpot! Thanks a million to all of you who helped.

Really appreciate you guys helping me out here- always thought I was relatively competent with these things, until I tried setting this thing up!

Only thing now is- front two speakers are really quiet. Not sure if it's the way auto calibrate set things up. I have volume at -25 and it's not very clear.
Is there an easy way to make things clearer? I'm reluctant to fiddle with too many things, as I don't want things to revert back to linear pcm...

Cheers again, Graham

Glad we could help you!
I know the problems with new amps. you just want to plug in and go....and 2 hrs down the line nothing is working and the f...in manuel is useless.

Thinking about this more, I think that setting it to 6.1 means that the back speaker is only fired up for codecs such as DD ES, and for a 'true' 7.1 codec like the one on Hellboy II, it isn't. Setting the pattern to 3/4.1 definitely works though - but obviously we're missing any discrete back-right audio.

I'll let you know what Sony say.

Funn that Hellboy is only showing as 5.1 on the amp., as it's saying 3/4.1 on mine.

Actually, I just read another forum where someone states that DTS-HD MA is designed to downmix 7.1 to 5.1 or 6.1, so you're fine. It also uses a pretty cool speaker repositioning alogirthm for 7.1 setups to reposition the audio based on the actual layout of your speaker setup.

So, that implies the back should be active for a 3/3.1 setup. I'm not too bothered though, given that it works under the 3/4.1 pattern.

Put my speakers to 7.1, even if the are only 6.1.
If put to 6.1 I cant even force my amp to get anything to back channel (I have connected to left sb as stated in manuel )
Playing through my PS3 Liniear PCM. all channel show as 7.1 and checkin audio on PS3...states its decoding DTS-MA 7.1

Re: The Sony STR-DA2400ES Pre/Owners Discussion Thread *Part 2*

Hi folks,

I'm kind of new to this sort of stuff...currently have a Samsung HT-THQ25 with 5.1 sound but i'm looking to get a Sony STR-DG820 to use with the existing speakers as i hear it's pretty much the best value AV receiver out there.

Problem is the current Samsung speakers have this weird connection which i can only describe as looking like a sideways B (does anyone know what i mean or am i just rambling?). Anyways...i was wondering if anyone here knew of any converters that would allow me to use the same Samsung speakers with the new Sony receiver??

Sorry if i've posted this in the wrong place :-S Any help greatly appreciated!

Even more bizzare. Hook Sky HD optical upto TV Opt in, hit SAT and get stereo sound then hit TV and dolby comes through ok along with the picture.

But no matter what I try no dolby through the SAT button...

Looks like I'm going to have to phone the Sony center.

im having an issue with my 2400es when using the gui on the BD hdmi input, when the screen should go blank it instead shows up the xbox 360 connected to the video 1 component??? i probably would have never noticed unless the kids hadnt left the xbox on, but now i know its happened its bugging me lol and has anyone else experienced colour loss/degradation when upconverting an xbox 360 or any other 1080p source from component to hdmi? im sure the upscaling software is downscaling the 1080p signal from the 360 and re-scaling it back to 1080p. over than that though im well happy with it on the whole, but it looks like i will have to wait for microsoft to repair the broken hdmi on the xbox 360 arcade....

Re: The Sony STR-DA2400ES Pre/Owners Discussion Thread *Part 2*

I thought it may be an idea to post how I set up my 2400 which will perhaps help others with similar equipment. Unless stated I have left everything on the amp as is (default)... I have a fully working unit and I'm getting correct audio from my discs (inc HD audio) and Skyhd box, all the lights which we all wish for all illuminate as they should... I am just going to post the settings I've changed and to what, the buttons required to change the settings you'll have to work out via the manual...

Firstly I connected up all my kit:
Sony BDP-S350 to HDMI BD In
Toshiba HD-DVD EP35 to HDMI DVD In
SkyHD (Thomson) to HDMI Sat In and OPT Sat In
TV to HDMI Out

Connected 7.1 Speakers

Connected power cable and switched on.

Performed initial setup operations (page 36)
Selected GUI Mode (page 39)
Performed Speaker Auto Calibration (Pages 44-47)

Then in the Input Menu go to SAT and change Audio setting to SAT OPT.

Exit out of GUI Mode

In turn switch on and setup each input device (in my case SkyHD, BD & HD-DVD)

SkyHD (Thomson)
Press Sat button to view Sky picture and make sure Sky settings are as follows:

Sound settings:
Optical Output to Dolby D
Picture Settings:
1080i

On the amp remote, press the Input Mode button until OPT is displayed in amp window.
Then press the Movie button to select C.ST. EX A this illuminates the orange Digital Cinema Sound light

Sony BDP-S350
Press BD button to view BD player menu and make sure the settings are as follows:

Audio Settings:
Output Priority to HDMI
Audio (HDMI) to Auto
BD Audio Setting to DIRECT

On the amp remote, press the Movie button to select C.ST. EX A this illuminates the orange Digital Cinema Sound light

Toshiba HD-DVD EP35
Press DVD button to view HD-DVD player menu and make sure the settings are as follows:

Audio Settings:
Digital Out SPDIF to Bitstream
Digital Out HDMI to Auto
Digital Direct Audio Mode to ON
Dialog Enhancement to On
Speaker Setting to 5.1ch

On the amp remote, press the Movie button to select C.ST. EX A this illuminates the orange Digital Cinema Sound light.

Be aware that when playing some dvd's there may be a requirement to go in to the actual dvd setup you are playing and make changes to the audio settings.

It took me quite some time to set my amp up and hopefully this will go some way to speeding up the process for those just getting theirs… I have made some minor changes with my speaker volumes but other than that it’s worked perfectly and I’m more than pleased.

Perhaps if people can post settings for their devices it may help others, such as X-Box, PS3, Free-Sat or whatever else you connect.

Have fun...

Forgot to add, I have setup my Harmony 555 remote to use the amp with all my devices and it works a treat...

Re: The Sony STR-DA2400ES Pre/Owners Discussion Thread *Part 2*

Sorry if this is a dumb question, or if it's been asked before, but if one takes the front pre-out from the 2400 into a separate amplifier and then to the front speakers, will the auto calibration still work by changing the value of the signal to the front pre-out?

Currently I have SKY HD, a Samsung DVD player (HD connected) and Xbox 360 also connected by HD. I also have a Wii (component). Will the DA2400ES upscale the DVD and Xbox 360 performances? Also, will it improve the performance of the Wii?

If it doesn't then I think I will pay Ł150 less and purchase the DG820?

Your help/expertise would be most appreciated.

hi there, as long as you have the ps3 audio set to lpcm and your amp is true hd ready the sound you get will be true hd , true the light wont come on but if you do some testing of differant soundtracks etc , you will deffo notice the differance, and if you press the display button on the ps3 you will see the true hd up in the right hand corner on your screen alongside with the mpbs rates etc proving that its working...hope this helps...steve

Just a follow on from a previous answer (and reply):... Is there really no easy fix to the amp outputting only linear PCM when it is connected to the TV and receiving a 5/7.1 audio input?

At the moment I follow the previous advice about change audio output to amp only (from amp and TV) but I wouldn't trust my kids to do it and it seems a total pain to have to do it every time I pop in a BD. The advice about turning off the tv speakers would drive the rest of the family insane.

Thanks in advance.

I have a similar problem. My DVD player is plugged into the 2400 with HDMI so the amp has to be on anyway. The problem is because the DVD sound output is set to bitstream and the amp just passes through the hdmi the tv says unsupported audio detected. The sound has to come from the amp only and I set it to amp only to stop the message on the tv. The annoying thing is that the amp sometimes forgets the setting and changes to amp + tv. Grrr

Re: The Sony STR-DA2400ES Pre/Owners Discussion Thread *Part 2*

Hey guys I've had my STR-2400 for a week now and have a question. When playing back a SD DVD on my BDP-S550 I cannot seem to get the DDEX to work I can only get the playback in Dolby Digital 5.1 even though I have a 7.1 setup. I have the surround EX set to Neural THX but cannot get this option when I playback a SD DVD. Blu rays work fie though. Any Ideas or has someone got a BDP-S550 and can let me know what audio settings they have.
I have the blu ray player connected to the amp via a HDMI cable BTW.

Thanks in advance.

Cannot see GUI or component in on TV - help

Just bought Sony DA2400ES, Bravia 46W4500 LCT TV, PS3 - have all these joined by HDMI and also a Wii by component on 2 (DVD).

When i first connected these I could bring up the GUI by pressing the remote but I am still waiting for my speaker to arrive so have just been watching TV for a week. I decided last night to have a play around with the GUI after having read more of the manual and went to press GUI. The input on the TV shows HDMI 1 and just a black screen. it says on , on the the receivers display. I switched to ps3 - it shows on TV no problem but no GUI. I try the Wii - just a black screen, no GUI.

Do I have a fsaulty receiver or what do i need to do to get the GUI - I havent even calibrated the thing yet! I tried resetting the receiver as per the manual where it says "clearing" . |Tried pressing gUI then "Menu" and "shift-menu" - nothing.

Please help

I'm not sure I get what you mean, my amp is connected to the TV from the only HDMI out into HDMI 1 on the TV - the only HDMI socket I have connected and the TV says HDMI 1 in the top left - do you mean some other setting?

I tried the amp on my parents sony LCD TV and the same story - no GUI and no Wii showing up when connected to component 2 ( DVD).

hmmm sounds broken to me. If you have tried it on another TV and reset the settings on the amp the gui menu should show up.
Maybe try another HDMI cable.

One possibility is that you've changed the input mode to analogue. Press the Input Mode button on the remote.

Yep, tried 3 HDMI cables - same result

Phoning supplier tomorrow, they say in the small print I have to pay for return, but if its faulty it should be their problem.

Re: The Sony STR-DA2400ES Pre/Owners Discussion Thread *Part 2*

Hi,

I bought a Sony STR-DA2400ES last Tuesday. Set it up easily and had no problems until Friday. The sound and video will now cut at random intervals for a couple of seconds, the screen goes blank and shows static then both audio and video come back. The display on the receiver then shows the sound coming through which suggests to me it is rebooting for some reason.

I have a Hitachi plasma tv which is about 2 and a half years old. The following are connected to the receiver:
apple tv via hdmi and digital optical - have had no problems
sky+ hd via hdmi and optical - had the same problem as i described above
ps3 via hdmi - had the same problem as i described above
xbox 360 elite via hdmi - had the same problem as i described above

The amp is then connected to 2 speakers (don't have the room for a full 5.1 set up).

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can fix my receiver or should i just replace it? I am using the same cables as I was using with my old receiver and that worked fine.

Please help.

Thanks

Re: The Sony STR-DA2400ES Pre/Owners Discussion Thread *Part 2*

Hi,

The only thing I can suggest to you is to reset the receiver to it's factory settings the procedure is to Power off the receiver and then while holding down "TONE MODE" and "2CH/A.DIRECT", press POWER to turn on the receiver. Then release the keys after a few seconds, after “CLEARING” appears on the display for a while, “CLEARED !” appears. Please note this will also clear your calibration so you will have to run it again. Really hopes this helps.

Thanks. I have tried that and it didn't fix the problem unfortunately. I've spoken to Sony and they tell me the firmware update (the Sky one) will fix the problem. Am not convinced but will let you know if it does.....

Thanks for your reply

Re: The Sony STR-DA2400ES Pre/Owners Discussion Thread *Part 2*

Got some responses from Sony about the problems playing back DD EX discs. Initially they said that the disc might only be encoded in 5.1. I pointed out that DD EX is only ever 5.1, but it matrixes the sound for the 6.1/7.1 channels across the surround speakers.

I then got a response today saying that she'd poken to a colleague, and been told that the 2400ES only supports 5.1 surround sound !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I started writing a rather sarcastic response that the colleague really ought to check the Sony web site for details on the 7.1 capabilities of the 2400ES, but chose to phone them instead.
The guy who I talked to is going to get back to me today or tomorrow. I said that they should try out SW-RotS, and Blade II to see what I mean.

I know that support staff have to deal with a lot of different product types, but reallly ....

Re: The Sony STR-DA2400ES Pre/Owners Discussion Thread *Part 2*

Actually, from a very helpful response on the BDP-S550 thread, from a guy in Australia, I think I know what's happening with the Dolby Digital EX audio.

He has a 5300ES, and it has the ability for you to specify whether the surround back decoding is Auto, On, of Off. On is to enable back decoding to happen for discs that say their DD EX, but where the relevant flag is not properly set. There's a sub-setting for On that enables you to specify whether DD EX (6.1 or 7.1) or Pro Logic IIx is used.

Of course, the 2400ES (nor the 5400ES, looking at the manual) does not have this setting, and I would suggest that it's probably internally set to Auto. This means that discs that don't have the flag set are being interpreted as DD 5.1.

I'll try to get this confirmed by Sony. If so, it's a real pity that they removed this function when they released the x400ES range. Maybe there's an engineer menu that enables this to be changed ?
