Re: STR-DG520, STR-DG720, STR-DG820 and STR-DG920 Discussion Thread *Part 2*

hmmm why...?

Anyway! Is there a way of manually unassigning a digital assign without a full reset, as I have assigned and named numerous other inputs that i dont want to mess with...?

If there is no other option I guess I'll have to try that

I was thinking the same why? probs something to do with the update

Back on topic,

Make sure you have definetly got D.ASSIGN set to VD1 -> VD1. Select VD1 -> OPT and then scroll up and down to get to VD1 digital input.

I've just tested mine over optical and it works as it should. If you have VD1 assigned to VD2 it only gives me AUTO and ANALOG options not OPT.

Double check that the XBOX is outputting over optical look for the red light on your optical breakout box or end of your optical cable...

in the forum feedback/news forum, there is an announcement that all threads over 1000 posts, are to be closed, and new ones opened.
it doesnt cause a problem, a link to the old post is there, and nothing will be lost.
its no biggie, just a matter of housekeeping is all.

Re: STR-DG520, STR-DG720, STR-DG820 and STR-DG920 Discussion Thread *Part 2*

Well i purchased the 820 today from Richer Sounds. I got it home to find out that its still the old version despite them receiving new stock on Monday. Why on earth are Sony still sending un-updated stock out!!! I thought anything bought now would bound to have the update!

Anyway, i thought i would ask if i will actually benefit from an updated version. I have sky HD (only the sports), will the sound through 5.1 be fantastically better than plain old stereo?, i guess that if i had the movies then it would be yes, but is it really that much better on sports and worth the hassle of returning, or waiting for new stock?

Sony are not sending un-updated stock out but some shops are still selling them as they have still got them in stock.

This could have been sitting at the Richer Sounds warehouse for the past 6 months. I bought one today, what is the best way to check if it is updated? The sales person said it should be but I didn't get to check it.

Afterall, I don't have Sky HD yet so not a massive issue for me.

Re: STR-DG520, STR-DG720, STR-DG820 and STR-DG920 Discussion Thread *Part 2*

I plan on buying my STR-DG820 from richer sounds but plan on keeping the Sky HD plugged into the telly and run a optical cable into the amp and plug my ps3 into the amp then onto the TV.

Should i worry about recieiving a non fixed version. Should i just plug HD and ps3 into the amp.

Also im hearing complaints that with the STR-DG820 there is a hum buzz from speakers where on quite dialogue scenes- can anyone confirm any noticable huzz buzz from any speakers or even the unit.

I'm looking at getting the 820 for myself for Christmas
Just wondering if anyone could shed some light on the whole XM satellite Radio???
Is it only on American models? I thought it was an American service?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: STR-DG520, STR-DG720, STR-DG820 and STR-DG920 Discussion Thread *Part 2*

Hey,

I have a STRDG720 hooked up to a ps3 and a Samsung LCD using hdmi through the receiver.

What should I have the audio settings on the PS3 set too under audio output settings? PS3™ | Audio Output Settings
Do I need to check all the Linear PCM Channels such as 5.1 ch 48khz, 7.1 ch 48hz and so on...
Or can I just leave the two 2 chn (44.1 and 48) linear pcm channels checked, and the Dobly Digital 5.1ch and DTS 5.1 ch checked and still get all the new codecs played by the ps3 (TrueHD,etc...) and sent through the receiver when its sets to A.F.D auto?

The reason im asking it because when all the boxes are checked I'm unable to pick any other surround settings, when I hit Afd auto on the remote I get the message on the receiver display saying "NOT USED" and grayed out. I use my ps3 as a media center and like to have music on multispeaker and some divx and dvd movies on other surroud settings. With all the boxes checked I'm unable to change anything as noted.

Thanks for any help

And if I can't change it will the STRDG820 do what I want since in can decode the newer codecs itself?

Do i need banana plugs to attach the bare speaker wires to the terminals on the back of the amp , as i can see something that screws off and not the usual clip open push in.

If I understand the problem correctly, then no, you will be fine with either version.

And no, you don't need banana plugs - just unscrew the terminal, strip approx 10mm of insulation from your speaker cables, twist strands together, insert in hole under terminal and screw up tight.

I wouldn't have thought so, as the amp isn't driving it, the receiver is just sending a line out signal.

Re: STR-DG520, STR-DG720, STR-DG820 and STR-DG920 Discussion Thread *Part 2*

well i went for a sub today but that didnt pan out but i was in the buying mood, i remembered the 820 was a richer sounds vip deal for 230 but when i called they said it ended on the 11th. so quick google and i ended up buying from play for 230 but got rac so 5% off that and hopefully 4%(its 4 right?) for quidco so potentially £209.30. havnt used quidco really, only twice and havnt even been paid for anything yet, fingers crossed.

anyway
gonna be running 360 elite, and depending on how i change my room till the new livingroom is done, mordaunt short 902 floors, 905c center, 302 surround, no sub, might switch 902 for the mission 782. now i just got to reorganize room and get rid of the pc. cant wait till the livingroom is done then i can set it properly. have to use my 24" monitor till i buy tv but looks like that wont be till after march now, see what sony do in the new year.

just thought since i brought my speakers now but not gonna get tv might aswell replace my JVC all in one.

btw anyone suggest some speaker cable?
using this as temp sound for few months in my bedroom so dont want to spend loads on it, rather do that when i do the livingroom.

thanks

Hi,

I haven't suffered from any speaker hum/buzz at all with the Sony STR-DG820 bought about 6 weeks ago from Play.com. No noise frommthe amp unit either. Unit from Play was the 'fixed' (blue-dot on the box) version. I used a decent shielded subwoofer cable (Chord Crimson). The amp is linked to PS3 thro HDMI receiving high def sound via LPCM delivered to new 5.1 speakers: Canton CD102. Sounds sweet. Make sure to turn the dynamic range control to off on the PS3.

Cheers

Afterall, I don't have Sky HD yet so not a massive issue for me.
Blue spot on the side of box, on the label that displays the product number & bar codes or an extra A4 sheet with instructions about selecting OPT or COAX over hdmi. However, in part one someone suggested they had an updated model without any of these points. Chech page 75 of the manual, the old versions sated hdmi had priority over coaxial or optical. Failing that, just connect your sky hd optical cable to the 820. If you have the old version, it will not give the option of selecting OPT when pressing the 'Input Mode' button

Hi, When the PS3 is set to only the DD5.1 and DTS plus the LPCM 2 Channel options in the sound outputs then you should be able to carry on using AFD Auto etc... The only time it wont work is when you have the output settings switched to LPCM 5.1 or 7.1 audio format settings.

The DG820 allows you to carry on using AFD Auto and other Surround modes (E.Surround) while only having the correct audio format checked in sound settings (LPCM 2ch) and this also works for TrueHD if selected on the disc. I believe the 720 is identical in sending audio over HDMI as LPCM so this should work.

Re: STR-DG520, STR-DG720, STR-DG820 and STR-DG920 Discussion Thread *Part 2*

I have a PS3 hooked up to my 820 via HDMI, the 820 then connects to my TV via HDMI, am I getting the best use of this? Should I use an optical cable for the audio and if so, does the HDMI cable from the PS3 then go straight into the TV instead of the receiver?

I'm sure this has been asked before, sorry.

Hi, connecting the PS3 via HDMI to 820 is the best way yes. With HDMI you can send HD audio 5.1 or 7.1 as LPCM over HDMI and full compatibilty with DTS-HD, TruHD etc... Optical cannot carry HD audio bandwidth so stick with HDMI, the single cable solution.
