Onkyo AV Confusion

Ive just got back from chatting to a guy at Richer Sounds. I was looking at buying the Onkyo 506 but he said that the 506 can only handle visual signals but not audio - im totally confused by the comment and sure i have totally got the wrong end of the stick (i did try to get him explain, but he said that the 506 just cant handle all of the signals?) He suggested that the 606 would be a better option as everything can go through it?

Can someone please explain in more detail?!

J

Re: Onkyo AV Confusion

As far as I'm aware, Richer Sounds man is right - the HDMI connection on the 506 can't handle audio, so you'd need to use a separate cable (optical for example) to do the sound duties.

If it's HD sound (TrueHD, DTS-MA) you're after via HDMI, then the 605 or 606 would indeed be the way to go.

Re: Onkyo AV Confusion

Riiiighhhtttt... now that actually makes some sense. So the box cant handle audio and visual through the same input. I couldnt understand from the way he was describing it, almost like you could watch the TV but with no sound, or listen to the sound but have no visual.... im a noob, but even i didnt think that could be right?!

I think for the extra the 606 sounds pretty good!

Thanks for the info

Re: Onkyo AV Confusion

The 576 can process audio via HDMI (LPCM).

Re: Onkyo AV Confusion

I probably should start a seperate thread, but Ive now seen the CAMBRIDGE AUDIO 640R seems to have even more connectivity than the Onkyo 606?

Any thoughts?

Edit** Should have searched the forum first - this answered the question: Cambridge Audio 640R or Onkyo TXSR606?
