Denon 1909

HI guys,

Thinking of getting a 1909, (my first AMP) and just have a quick question.
If I connect say a PS3 via HDMI to the amp can I get the video out on a component socket or coax? or does it have to go out on HDMI. The reason I ask is my TV doesnt have HDMI connection.

Thanks in advance

Re: Denon 1909

I'm afraid HDMI sources only come out on HDMI. However the 1909 does do it the other way round (upconverting), i.e. composite, svideo and component sources can be output via HDMI. Not much use to you but thought I would mention it.

No AV receiver is capable of downconverting HDMI to other video outputs, I think its probably to do with it circumventing the HDCP.

Re: Denon 1909

Thanks dwhite.

Im new enougn to this. Whats my best way to get this to work. Im looking to get the DD sound from the PS3 and a Component for my picture. Would it be possible if I connect the PS3 with the Optical Link and the HDMI, so i.e. getteing the sound from the HDMI & the picture from the optical connection into the amp and out on a componet connection?
Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Thanks

Re: Denon 1909

No optical is sound only, it does not carry any video. Can you not get a component cable for your PS3, that would seem the simplest solution. Still use the optical for audio and component cable for video.

Re: Denon 1909

HI,
I was kind of thinking in that direction, but will the PS3 output on the 2 sources at once? Sound optical and then take the video from a HDMI cable which is broke into component on the other end?
Sorry if this is a dumb question.
Thanks

Yes it can do that, the amp in my games room does not have an HDMI connection so I use the optical for sound, and HDMI for video direct into the TV, you can set it in the settings menu on the PS3 dashboard. But in his case I would recommend getting a component cable for the PS3 and feed component into the TV and optical into the amp.

Are you going to be upgrading to an HDTV anytime soon?

Re: Denon 1909

This is a cracking amp, but dont really think you will be getting the best out of it without the HDTV as the HD sound and HD video go hand in hand. Why are you interested in this amp?

Re: Denon 1909

Hi Jim,

this amp seems like a good place to start. Kinda leaving my options open for the years ahead.
Im open to sugestions on other amps.
My set up at the moment is the PS3 which is connected to a 28inch TV (this is going to change to a Epson EMPtw700 (this is going to be installed 7meters away from the amp and ps3 to a pre wire posistion which was wired serveral years ago with 4 coax and a cat5 (which leaves me stuck with no HDMI untill I can convince the wife that we should repaint the room so I can break the plaster to run another cable) I get my sound from an old sony amp my brother gave me on loan.
As you can guess this home cinema has been a few years in the making.

Jim, if you think my cash would be better directed to another amp please let me know. I was looking at the Onkyo 606 aswell, but changed my mind after finding this forum.

Cheers

For the money you are going to spend on this amp you cant really go wrong with this, I bought one a few weeks ago and cant help but smile everytime I turn it on.

Sorry I didnt realise this was going to be plugged into a projector. I thought it was going to be running the CRT TV. I would definately recommend this for a projector set up. But do try get the HDMI run into the projector aswell. As I said you cant go wrong with this amp. Espicially when you use the True HD and DTS Master Audio. I looked at the Onkyo too, but found this to be more to my liking in the terms that I feel it looks a bit better.

What speakers are you going to be using this with?

Re: Denon 1909

I have an old second hand set of Wharfedales with a passive sub, these will aslo be upgraded as part of the long term plan.
Another key feature which brought me to the Denon is its zone 2 feature. I have wire for extra speakers in other rooms to run on this

The Zone 2 feature does rule on this, if you get the Harmony remote with the RF extender you can controll the amp from anywhere in your house too.
