Re: The Sony STR-DA2400ES Pre/Owners Discussion Thread

I have this receiver on pre-order with Play.com and also have the Jamo A 102 HCS 5 speakers coming from Digital Direct. I've been doing a lot of reading on the subject but as a relative novice I was wondering what sort of cables I will need to connect the two together?

Up to now I have been assuming I'll need some speaker cable (one large piece I can cut into sections appropriate for each speaker) and a different cable for the sub. Is that it? Can anyone recommend a good place to get them all? Preferably somewhere that won't break the bank, I don't think I'm enough of an audiophile to detect subtle differences in the sound if the cables are slightly cheaper

Re: The Sony STR-DA2400ES Pre/Owners Discussion Thread

thanks rotten fox for that. I too have ordered the Sony 2400. My problem might be that my Mission 2 front speakers 760i are only 6ohms so I am hoping there may be some switch on the amp. to put it on 6ohms, I am going to start looking round to thinking about the Mordaunt Shorts 902i's and put my Missions to the rear. I am a little or quite a lot out of date with new amps as my old Denon is 14 years old so any technical help would be much appreciated.

This has to be the cheapest AV receiver with multichannel preouts and HD audio.

Cable Universe would be a good place to start for speaker cable. I've linked you to 100M of it for £9.50.

EDIT: For sub cable, Lambda-tek, a quality Belkin one, for relatively cheap (£6.50) considering the length.

Re: The Sony STR-DA2400ES Pre/Owners Discussion Thread

I hope those that are pre-ordering from play are remembering to use quidco to get £14.80 off the price.

Back on topic, really looking forward to receiving it so I can get rid of my existing optical switch box and just use one remote to control everything (apart from PS3 obviously).

As there is only one media port on the amp, does anyone know if Sony will do a splitter so that I can have the ipod cradle hooked up AND one of the devices that allow streaming audio from my PC?

Try streaming from your PS3. I'm getting great results from mine and again it cuts down on boxes and wiring.

Re: The Sony STR-DA2400ES Pre/Owners Discussion Thread

I do use Twonky to stream to the PS3, but it can sometimes get noisy (60Gb model), so I thought I would get the add-on streaming device.

How does the media port work? I will be upgrading from a 1070 and was looking to connect my HTPC via HDMI.

On a side note anyone else a little dissaponted it looks like a DG model rather than the current ES range.

I'm going by the diagram in the manual and comparing it to the 3200es.

No, it still has a groove at the top by the looks of it, just a bit smaller than the previous ES', and above the screen. Still better looking than an Onkyo anyday though!

You're right of course, from the diagram it looks more like a DG model which I'm disappointed to say doesn't have that 'we mean business' sort of look that the current ES models display.

Re: The Sony STR-DA2400ES Pre/Owners Discussion Thread

The Onks. are pig ugly.

Why don't Onkyo improve the looks?
Too many buttons and text.

The Sony str-da2400es has a smaller display, not that the current ones are big enough so it is not that important.

It would be nice to have at least 1 svhs input so I can connect $ky to it. Don't see a need for the composite inputs.

Re: The Sony STR-DA2400ES Pre/Owners Discussion Thread

I don't think this gen has a smaller display, if you look at the 3300ES manual, the display is illustrated in exactly the same way (small box with a bigger box around, although small box is labled screen).

EDIT: 100th post. Woo.

Re: The Sony STR-DA2400ES Pre/Owners Discussion Thread

Just noticed on another forum that apparently the service manual for this also covers the 920. I think this is basically the 920 in a better case with possibly a nicer output stage (to wear the ES badge). The price point would certainly suggest this. Not that it's a bad thing...

Rather than letting google or whichever site you originate from get this money, if you sign up to www.quidco.com you get the referral fee paid back to you. The quidco account does cost £5 a year, but this is taken from your earnings. Therefore if you are not currently a member of quidco, you would still be £9.80 better off by going to play through quidco than not.

Hopefully that explains it. I am not trying to sell quidco to people, just thought that I would remind people that you get 4% back from play purchases, and since most people are pre-ordering from play, I thought it would be useful.

Back on topic, do you think that Sony might do an update that would allow the amp with a bluetooth mediaport adapter on it control a PS3?

Re: The Sony STR-DA2400ES Pre/Owners Discussion Thread

I'm thinking of buying one of these but was wondering if anybody had any experience with a similar receiver and knows how it compares to something like the Denon 2805. I've had that receiver for over three years but want to change to something with HDMI and HD audio. Ideally, I'd go for another of the Denon 280x series but they seem to get more expensive with every iteration (I paid £530 for the 2805 when it was released, the current 2808 is about £740).

Would the amplification quality in this Sony be poorer than the old Denon?

Have the same issue of 6 ohms speakers (old surround home theatre kit), just read the pdf above and it states 2 switches, either a 4 ohm or 8 ohm setting for speakers. So I guess we are covered, unless I am not understanding how it all works. I am guessing 4ohms will be for speakers between 4-7 and anything from 8ohms> will use 8 ohm setting. Am I reading this right?
It' s page 42 i think in the spec pdf link on page 1 of this post. If I am wrong please state before I blow my speakers with this bad boy!

My system is 6ohms all round, seeing as I'll never crank the amp up to anything like its potential out put, think I'll just use the out of the box settings? Anyone know better please advise. Thanks

Re: The Sony STR-DA2400ES Pre/Owners Discussion Thread

The Jamo speakers I ordered arrived yesterday, very nice they are too While I wait for the receiver to be dispatched I've been gathering the cables necessary and had a couple of questions. I have a PS3 and Xbox 360 (older model without an HDMI port on the back). My plan was to connect the PS3 via HDMI (for both video and audio) while I connected the Xbox 360 by component (for video) and optical (for audio).

Is that the way to get the best sound out of both?

What kind of setup will I need to do on the PS3 / 360 in order to tell them to output the right type of audio?

Am I right in understanding that even though the amp supports HD audio decoding the PS3 will be doing the decoding itself? And if so what does that mean? Will I have to tell the amp to expect this somehow?

to get this to work all you do is tell the ps3 to send video and audio over hdmi, then go into the bluray settings menu on the ps3 and tell it to send pcm over hdmi. The ps3 will decode the dtsma and dolby true hd and send as multichannel pcm over hdmi or it will send the uncompressed pcm track on some discs over hdmi. With you are amp it will say pcm on the front of the amp and the blue multichannel decoding light will be on and thats it you are listening to the decoded had audio from the ps3.

Re: The Sony STR-DA2400ES Pre/Owners Discussion Thread

Just cancelled the order for the 820 and went for this. Using quidco for the first time too which came to £14 something back (minus £5 joining fee).

My speakers are likely to 4ohm for the foreseeable future. Will this cause problems? Can I set the amp to 4ohms?

Also how does the 2400 compare to the denon 1908? It is roughly £100 cheaper.

thanks in advance.
Best Regards, matt.

Yes you can. Speaker impedance can be set to either 4 or 8 ohms. Page 43 of the manual:
