Question Re: FAQ: Setting up a PS3 to an Onkyo amp

Can I get something straight here...?

Is there not an "auto" setting for audio on the PS3 that changes automatically?

I keep seeing posts about set it to "x" for this and "y" for that and I have to be honest I'm a bit confused!

I'm thinking of getting a PS3 and an Onkyo 605 but I for one wouldn't want to keep changing the settings.

Or have I totally misunderstood?

Hi Guys, Should you be able to hear sound from the center speaker when using PS3 [Call of duty 4] as I Only can hear Left, Right, Sub + Surrounds, Amp is displaying multichannel ok, Blu Ray is fine, Many thanks, Ian.

Hi Azzin
No.
If you want to change to optical (previous on HDMI ) you have to go to the menu.
Did you mean this?
Or say, your HDMI only and you play a SD DVD you will have to change HDMI audio out to Bitstream

Hi KF,

I would want to connect the PS3 to the 605 by HDMI and only HDMI (no optical at all), but would I have to keep changing settings depending on what I was watching/playing?

Hi Azzin
For Blu-ray your want it on LPCM,if you were to play a game or watch a DVD you would have to change it to Bitstream.

Do you mean during gameplay or in the opening credits

During gameplay the centre speaker will work , but I have a feeling its just L + R during the credits / opening scenes etc

Re: FAQ: Setting up a PS3 to an Onkyo amp

Easy solution is to have a second DVD player for SD DVDs--then you don't have to change anything. I only watch Blu-ray discs on my PS3, and play SD/HD-DVDs on my Toshiba HD-DVD player. That prevents me from having to change audio settings on PS3.

Hi Force-1
That's what i do PS3 is for Blu-ray playback only and DVD is on a seperate player you can have each Input separately calibrated as well, then.
All the best.

Re: FAQ: Setting up a PS3 to an Onkyo amp

I would like to start by thanking the originator of this thread as it has been a big help for me in setting up my system.

I was having a play with it last night and i think i am somewhere near happy with the set up.

I have found that i get a better sound quality when the PS3 is set to bitstream and the 605 does the decoding.

I have a 7.1 system (conventional surrounds not di-poles) and i cannot get it to sound right from the rear speakers. Now, i am not sure if that is because i have only got 5.1 recordings or not? i have also been trying Blue Ray Disks and i cannot get it to sound right on them either, even when in LPCM mode

Can anyone suggest some decent movies to set the system up with in 7.1?

Thanks in advance.

Just watched Saw IV on Blu-Ray (great film) that has 7.1 in the audio set up. Although the content is not everyones cup of tea.

Thanks for that. i've got the other 3 Saw films on DVD, might as well get this on Blu Ray.

What setting is the 605 displaying for Audio? I find Multichannel has muffled centre and rears, Pure Audio is much clearer.

Dolby Digital EX adds a centre rear channel to provide 6/7.1.

Re: FAQ: Setting up a PS3 to an Onkyo amp

If you're seeing Dolby EX, you're either connected via digital optical cable (rather than HDMI) or more likely, are connected by HDMI but your settings on the PS3 set to output bitstream rather than PCM. Change to PCM and you're sorted.

I am using HDMI, but i find i get a better sound quality when using Bitstream over LPCM. I assume that is because the amp is decoding rather than the PS3?

I know i won't get the HD audio when on Blu Ray, but i will probably just swap it over when i watch a Blu Ray disk.

It wasn't automatically showing Dolby EX, it was one of the selections when flicking through the surround options arrows on the remote.

What sound features should Black Hawk Down on Blu Ray have? That is what i have been having a play with...

Re: FAQ: Setting up a PS3 to an Onkyo amp

Interesting thread - thanks to all contributors!

I have a PS3 connected to 805 via HDMI cable with the PS3 is set to output LPCM and the 805 to use Multi-Channel.

However, I've just added a couple of speakers to make up to 7.1 and for 5.1 soundtracks I do not get anything out of the 2 rear surrounds.

That's OK, I understand why and had it explained that I need to use one of the listening modes, like Dolby ProLogic IIx to create something to output from the rears. If I do that for a HD audio track, am I still getting the HD audio or will it downgrade it to something else?

Re: FAQ: Setting up a PS3 to an Onkyo amp

Firstly, remember - no matter what you hear here or anywhere else, only you can truly decide on what sounds best, it's all up to individual tastes/rooms/ears.

Personally, in my HC room, I prefer the PS3 set to LPCM and listen via Pure Audio on the 605. It seems to give me better clarity, steering and "oomphf". The PS3 decoding is on par with the amp's really, but (and i'm a bit indifferent on this) some say that if it's a strict DD 5.1 film, choose bitstream on the PS3 and have the amp decode it as DD 5.1 - if it's anything above that (DD True HD etc.) set the PS3 to LPCM (here's where I prefer Pure Audio) - it's easy to change on the PS3 while you're playing a film to test the differences with your setup as you seem to know.

I also have a 7.1 setup, and what I did to "play" was to unplug the front left and right, and centre speakers - and just listen to the rears for a bit, changing through the various PS3 and 605 options as I went. That's the most straightforward way. Once you're happy with that, plug in the centre and try again. Then, plug in the front left and right's and (hopefully) hey presto!

Running the auto setup with the mic is of course crucial (better job than using my sound meter) - as of course is enabling all of the various audio options (tick boxes) for the audio settings on the PS3. I missed this last bit out initially

What was your conclusion about the listening mode for 5.1. material into 7.1 speakers?

Thanks!

Re: FAQ: Setting up a PS3 to an Onkyo amp

Good question.
My side speakers are bipoles, the rears are standard (for what it's worth).
To me, even though they Left and Right are matrixed, I/we prefer the more encapsulating surround with all 4 on the go. They're not that far apart really (see for yourself here - http://www.avforums.com/forums/showt...59#post6480459 ) so there's still very focused direction in the rear. If I unplug the rears I lack a bit of extra clout, if I unplug the sides I miss some quality and that "woo" factor.
If I turn one or the other up to compensate, it's not the same.
OK, it's not the perfect shaped room, nor the most expensive speakers you can buy - so others may disagree this is the ideal, but upshot it, 7.1 with 5.1 sounds more surrounding and involving to us.
Hope this helps

Great! What listening mode do you use - for both SD and HD audio?

Re: FAQ: Setting up a PS3 to an Onkyo amp

I too was having problems lastnight when watching a Blu-Ray film(firewall).
I set the sound output to LPCM and started watching the film and noticed i got nothing coming out the rear speakers (i have a 7.1 setup). So i played aground with some settings and no matter what i did with it set at LPCM i couldn't get it to have sound coming out the rears correctly.

In the end i had to set the PS3 to bitstream and use EX which gave me a decent sound. which to me seemed ridiculess on a Blu-Ray.
There wasnt any sound settings on the disc either and when i put the sound display up it said 5.1in LPCM mode or multichannel in bitstream mode.

To be honest i have not noticed it before i was watching Pirates of carabian 3 other day which sounds awesome.(didn't notice if it had 7.1 soundtrack)
also when i have been watching normal DVD's i have never had to change to DD ex to get full 7.1 it just did it when in DD and sounded perfect.

Anybody know the reason for this Was this basically down to a crap soundtrack on a Blu-Ray movie or have i got something wrong ?im using the settings as advised by ROM in the first post(thanks by the way).

what listening mode do you(collective you) use to when watching a Blu-Ray with 7.1 speakers and what do you use when watching sd DVD with 7.1?

Sorry to go on a bit but i was getting so angrylast night messing with the settings i nearly turned the film off and went to bed with the huff

If you use Multi-channel then, no, you wont get any sound out of rear surrounds (I'm just going through this bitter learning experience, as well!)

There are a number of Listening Modes (Dolby PL IIx, THX Ultra Cinema 2, Neural THX 7.1, etc.) that will add a rear channel and play all speakers. Haven't decided which sounds best yet!

Let me know if you decide anything!

Re: FAQ: Setting up a PS3 to an Onkyo amp

Well, just spent a while trying out different options.

First up, I tried a BluRay disk to be honest I am not 'bowled over' by any of the options - probably settled on switching Audysey off and using THX Ultra2 Cinema (to add rear channel for 7.1). There didn't seem to be as much oomph as I expected.

Then I tried an SD disk (ROTK) and, at first I kept the PS3 set to LPCM. Again, I was a bit underwhelmed and some of the scenes that should have had some serious bass-thumping action were definitely lacking. Then I switched to Bitstream and the 805 chose Dolby EX. Wow, what a difference. Immediately, the whole thing sounded more convincing.

From now on, I will use Bitstream for non-HD and LPCM for BluRay. I certainly makes me think that I will swap the PS3 for a standalone when there is one for a decent price that outputs HD audio in Bitstream.

I too was disappointed by the sound on Blu-Ray on LPCM i also found it lacking on certain films. Some sound good Pirates 3 for instance and some like Firewall sound muffled and quite where as if i switch it to bitstream i then get the oomph and the wow factor.I know some out there will dissaprove of that saying im not getting HD audio but it just didnt sound right to me.
Im going to watch Independence day BD tonight which has master audio 5.1 ill see how that goes and let you know what listening mode i end up using.

I am too thinking i might end up buying a dedicated Blu-Ray player unless Sony come with a firmware fix for the sound.

Also on another note i haven't been blown away by BR movies as of yet.I haven't been able to see a massive difference between my SD DVD's and the BD movies.Suppose this means the PS3 does an excellent job of upscaling
As i said earlier im watching Independence day later which i have both SD and BD of so i will compare the two and see what the differance i can see.

P.S. if people are reading this who are thinking of getting a ONKYO amp these problems are nothing to do with the amp which is brilliant its a fault of the PS3

P.P.S Just found out that Firewall BD only has DD 5.1 and no master audio..Personally i think all BD movies should have master audio we pay enough for the movie over a sd dvd.
