I've read a few reports of people being told this would be ok, but none by someone who uses this receiver on a daily basis.
Warbie, I have the 605 and a Pioneer 436 XDE which accepts 1080p@24Hz and I can confirm that the 605 does indeed pass through the 1080p@24Hz

This means that all the equalization that Audyssey has done is then not applied, but I only want to adjust the front main speakers and leave the others set to the Audyssey values. Thanks

Hey guys, can anyone help with my question, I'm still struggling. Thanks

Thumbs up Re: The Onkyo 605 owners thread

Well, I thought I'd have a look around the shops in Manchester today and was surprised to find a black 605 sitting on the shelf at Central Radio. Temptation gave in and I bought it.

The salesman said they had only just got it in the day before and hadn't even had time to connect it up to anything. They boxed it up for me and I carried it home. Got very heavy towards the end of my 15 min walk!

All set up now and I am *very* happy. Not only am I impressed with the PCM tracks on my blu ray discs (I dont have any with True HD yet) but I've also heard a noticeable improvement from standard DVDs and HD DVD's played through the 360. Just wish the 360 could do as the PS3 does and send the full HD tracks to the amp as PCM.

My last amp was bought way back in 2002 but having never had a problem with it, I wasn't expecting a big improvement on standard DVDs. Nice surprise.

All I need to do now is save up for new speakers as I'm still using the ones that came with the Sony amp in 2002.

Re: The Onkyo 605 owners thread

Hey, Onkyo 605 owners...!

I need a new av receiver and am looking at either this or the Sony DG910.

As the Onkyo is approx £140 more expensive, the only reason i would go with the Onkyo (for my setup anyway) would be the Onkyo's potential for upscaling sd tv source material from the Sky HD box to improve the picture quality - but i don't know if it supports this.

So my question is whether upscaling (as decribed) is at all possible with the Onkyo, and whether anybody has tried this and can report the findings?

My setup will be very, very simple:

Sky HD box to Pioneer PDP-508XD via HDMI (for image) and optical (for DD sound) to (whichever) amp; PS3 to (whichever) amp via HDMI, and HDMI out to plasma TV.

However, i guess i am asking whether there is any advantage in connecting the Sky HD box to the amp via HDMI, in the hope that the sd image will be 'upsacled' in some way to produce a better picture quality? The Sony will not do this - if the Onkyo can't either, i might as well save myself £140...

All help much appreciated.

Regards, Kevin.

The Onkyo doesn´t upscale, it just upconvert analog signals to the hdmi output. There is a hidden menu where you can select a option to upscale to 720p but by what i heard is not an improvement. By the way, the hdmi inputs in the Onkyo are just passthrough.

Re: The Onkyo 605 owners thread

Hi, received my 605 just before the weekend from AV Sales, only just had time to play with it last night. Been happy with most things, though I'm new to proper AV, so it's a big world of settings out there to me! The missus unhappy with size of it though. Anyhow, I'm having a couple of issues that I'm hoping you might be able to help me with.

No sound through optical from my xbox 360.
I've plugged the 'In' video source into the yellow (composite?) Game/TV Video in socket on the amp and then use monitor out into the yellow socket of a composite/scart adapter. Then if I use the 2 audio L/R cables into the amp, I get sound fine. However when I leave the 2 sound chanel cables not connected. Then plug in the optical cable from the xbox cable to the optical input 1 or 2 on the amp, I get no sound. I have gone into the settings for 'Optical In' and told Game/TV to use Optical 1 (or 2 when I tried that). But still no sound, I may be doing soemthing silly wrong, can anyone offer me any advice on this?

Black and white pic only?
Also, another query, I don't have my new fancy TV till the weekend, until then I'm using a scart input. I use the "monitor out" into a composite/scart adapter into the TV. However, I only get Black & White picture from the xbox on that. If I flick HDMI Monitor:Yes, it comes up in colour, but I'm not using HDMI I am I in that setup yet? And the receiver manu no longer displays on screen then if I use HDMI Monitor:Yes.

Yours, very confuzzled,
David

dvd (sd) component & coaxial to amp then to plasma through hdmi lead

xbox 360 + hd dvd player component & optical to amp then to plasma through hdmi lead

sky+ s-video & optical to amp then to plasma through hdmi lead

i have only used 1 hdmi lead from hdmi 1 on amp & hdmi 1 on plasma

cheers in advance
ive been in touch with av sales today and they got in touch with onkyo
because my sound is going into the onkyo through optical & coaxial and NOT through the hdmi input the amp DOES NOT convert it to hdmi audio
this amp (along with 99% of other amps aparently) does not have the technology inside to do this.
also the problem now for me is that while my tv is set to hdmi for my picture from my 3 inputs into the amp i cant use a phono lead because the tv wont allow the sound through L & R while im watching hdmi

one of the points me getting this amp was to cut down on the cables
i am to be honest pretty gutted by this

If I understand you correctly you wish the Receiver to pass the audio via HDMI to your screen. My guess is that only cheaper Receivers such as the Onkyo TX-SR505 which have passthrough HDMI will do this. Full HDMI Repeater Receivers will split out the audio for processing and amplification (thats what they're for) whereas with a Passive HDMI Receiver such as the 505 it is necesary to run a separate audio cable to the Receiver because the Receiver is not capable of stripping out the audio and just passes it on to the screen.
Hope this helps

Re: The Onkyo 605 owners thread

i had anticipated being allowed to do this through the amp
its not down to onkyo or panasonic really as this is how they are made
i just expected (wrongly it seems) that seeing the hdmi out takes the video from the amp to the screen it would also take the audio but alas if i want audio throughput i will have to use the component out to component in on the plasma

i must admit the picture quality does seem to be a lot better though especially the sky
all in all im happy with the amp and the tv

I'm going to test the optical issue with a friends setup tonight. But does anyone have any idea about the other issue of Black & White via component?

So is this right, it doesn't upscale regular a regular DVD player. And as such I will need to buy a seperate upscaling DVD player, like the Samsung DVD-HD1080P7 DVD Player?

Wink Re: The Onkyo 605 owners thread

Hi Guys.

I will be getting this Amp in the next couple of weeks and just wanted confirmation on a couple of things.

My set-up will be really simple. PS3 --> AMP -->TV (all via HDMI)

1) The Amp will not pass sound from the PS3 to the TV but process it itself, Correct?

2) It takes 4mm Banana Plugs (my first time using them )

no on the sound side mate ive got the same problem
the only way to get the sound through the hdmi lead is from another hdmi source into the onkyo then it passes it through
i get this from what the experts have told me
the 605 does not send sound through hdmi from optical or coaxial imputs

Hello,

What's anyones opinion on the stereo ability of the '605. Is there a benefit to using its bi amp ability and/or Pure Audio Mode. How does it compare to a stand alone stereo amp of about 250-300 pounds?

Re: The Onkyo 605 owners thread

I'm wondering about how loud this goes. The 90w and 140w things are unclear, so I thought I'd ask here first.

I've currently got an old Pioneer VSX-D812 Amp driving an Infinity Oreus 5.1 Speaker package. The Pioneer claims to be 7x100W, and the speakers are 6 Ohm, rated to 100W with 85dB sensitivity. But when I listen to loud explosions and the like @ -30dB volume or so on the Pioneer, it can occasionally overload and shutdown (The Lord of the Rings DVDs are notable for this).

Will the 605 be capable of driving my speakers to a decent volume without overloading?

Thanks!

Question Re: The Onkyo 605 owners thread

If not the 605 then what do you recommend?

I have a panny SA-XR25 slimline digital receiver with is playing up so needs replacing.

As I do not have a HD ready Screen, (will wait until this one stops working) should I spend the money and buy the 605 or should I get a receiver that is non HDMI?

I have a TH42PW6 panny plasma screen.
With VGA and 2 scart ports, as far as I know.

DVD: Video is connected via Component --> VGA cable
Audio connected via optical cable to existing receiver

Sky: Standard Sky digital connect via scart. Will be getting Sky+ in a few months time

PS2: Audio connected via optical cable to existing receiver
Video need to check connection could be composite

I mainly watch SKY and DVD’s.

Thanks

Re: The Onkyo 605 owners thread

Hi Gez,

I think it would still be worth getting an HDMI switching amp simply to future proof yourself.
The 605, 705 & 805 will also upconvert to component which you can then feed to the PWD6 with your component to VGA cable.

DVD -> Component/Optical -> Onkyo AV Receiver

Sky -> Scart -> Screen
Sky -> Phono -> Onkyo AV Receiver

PS2 -> PS2 Cable -> Onkyo AV Receiver

Onkyo AV Receiver -> Component to VGA -> Screen

It would be well worth investing in a PS2 component cable as this will vastly improve the picture you are getting via composite at the moment!!

Re: The Onkyo 605 owners thread

Chris,

Thanks for the quick reply!

I have just read this: HDFury HDMI-VGA and PW6 (cost is about £80)
No HDMI? No problem! HDFury HDMI-VGA and PW6

Would this make any difference?

Could I output to VGA from HDMI?

You could do but you're not going to see any real benefit in picture quality, it'll just be another digital to analogue conversion in the chain.

I could look at that if I went down the Sky HD route or HDMI DVD player etc.
