Denon 1712 - binding post/banana plugs help

I have monster-type quicklock banana plugs, and they won't fit in the binding posts for either my denon 1712 or cambridge s30 speakers. I can't for the life of me figure out how to connect the buggers. other threads have indicated that there is a plastic insert inside the post that can be removed, like this:

however, I can't see anything like that. can anyone help?

You'll find that the black plastic centres come out of the thumb screws. These are the bungs even though they have a hole in their centre.

From the bottom picture it looks as though as you say the bungs are removed.
If you are using standard banana plugs and there is only one type then maybe a little pressure will allow the plug to go in.
