Yes they are unbranded but the sides are quite curved, you might need thicker rubber feet to steady them.

Hi

Debating an upgrade from my SonyDAV260 which I have been very happy with.

What is the Onkyo like for music (mp3) as opposed to films / TV. Is the sub up to much?

My Sony has always sounded good for music so I'd like to make sure the Onkyo is just as good / hopefully better.

Hello guys,

I have a little problem with my onkyo set and PS3. When I play a game/bluray on my ps3 the red lights (dts, dolby,...) on the receiver don't light up. I set the PS3 to output bitstream but that doesn't fix the problem. The only way I can manage to get the lights to light up is to tick off all sound options except for DTS. When I do that the light for the DTS on the receiver do light up.

Does anyone know a solution to this problem?

Thanks!

It's possible I may soon be an HT-S5405 owner as my now ancient "Acoustic Solutions" system is failing.

Before purchase I'd like to see if anyone can forsee any issues I might encounter with the equipment listed below and the way I'm planning on attaching everything.
So:

Samsung 40" LCD Television
HT-S5405 - HDMI Out to Television HDMI 1

PS3 - HDMI to Onkyo
SkyHD - HDMI directly to television HDMI 2
SkyHD - Optical Audio to Onkyo
WII - Component directly to television Component
WII - Red/White Audio Leads to Onkyo

My reasoning being, as the SkyHD doesn't do the full 5.1 audio over HDMI I might just as well plug the SkyHD directly into the television where it can have it's own input.
The audio from SkyHD will go via the Optical Cable to the Onkyo.
So I'll still get the full surround sound options (via optical) but the SkyHD will have it's own input on the television.
Any potential issues with this idea?

PS3 - simply HDMI to Onkyo. It does all of it's surround sound over HDMI, so the simplest to connect.

WII doesn't use HDMI at all, so no real point connecting that to the Onkyo - with the exception of the Red/White audio leads.
WII directly connected to Component on the television.

Main questions are:

1. Will what I propose above work OK?
2. Would I actually gain anything by connecting SkyHD via HDMI to Onkyo as opposed to directly to the television?

Hello all, I know that I've posted a lot of questions but this should be the last one before I take the plunge (hopefully early September!)

PS3 - HDMI to Onkyo
Laptop video - HDMI to onkyo
Laptop audio - Optical Audio to Onkyo
iPhone dock - Optical Audio to Onkyo

And all of these output onto my HDMI LG TV

Will all of this work, and can you save channels to the units radio?

Simple answer to your questions are Yes. The way way you want to connect all your equipment to the system will work perfect.

Hi All,
Can anyone answer the above please re sub popping. Also, what is the sound like with an ipod/iphone connected directly to USB (previously had the Onk dock).

Hi,

I am about to purchase this system and have questions about the speaker wires:

What lengths are provided in the package? Which diameter?

Which diameter would you recommend to purchase for this setup:
Center, front speakers: 8-12 m cable each
Left Surround: 6-8 m

Thanks a lot for your help!

Cheers,
Ron

I'm going to be making a purchase of this system shortly.
I've just had an email from amazon.co.uk listing a price reduction on this item - it's still cheaper elsewhere, however.
They are listing this as:

HT-S5405B
ONKYO HT-S5405B 5.1 Home Cinema AV Receiver Speaker: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

I was just wondering if this system has always had the "B" at the end or if this is maybe a new revision?

Or is "B" simply for Black?

Hi There - The cables are 350cm in length (per speaker) and this wasnt enough cable for what I needed. It was recommended i purchase this cable: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Quality-1-5...4271485&sr=8-1
which has certainly done the trick ! All sounds great !
Hope that helps
Cheers

Suddenly made sense that the "B" stood for Black
Ordered mine from Amazon just a few minutes ago.
Looking forward to getting hold of it now.

Hi guys, I am thinking of picking one of these up as my first 5.1 system and had a quick question. I need the rear speakers to go on stands. There is nowhere for them to sit and I don't want to wall mount them. Has anyone put them on stands, any stands recommended? My couch is against a back wall and ideally I want the stands to fit under the base of the couch too.

Cheers

Hi
Bought a pair of bog standard rear stands for mine and fit fine . Pretty much any universal stands should be ok . They are quire small and very light so there are no real issues .
Enjoy your new system .

Hi
Ive got a stack of gear and have set about 12 different functions with mine all with and without the Onkyo . Works fine and dont have any issues only when switching from blu ray with the receiver on to sky . instead of just changing it , make sure you power everything off first with the Harmony then select sky as for some reason the Onkyo needs to turn itself off to switch between these 2 HDMI inputs . Other than that mine works fine with no issues ,

There is no option to change the display from "cab/sat" to "Sky HD" but you can change from "Game" to "PS3"

I bought one of these a few days ago. It is the first receiver and 5.1 system I have ever bought and all I can say is ... wow! It is amazing. I have my SkyHD box connected with optical for 5.1 and noticed there is another optical socket, should I use that for my PS3, AppleTV or Xbox or do they all work ok through HDMI?

Also...as a newbie to this is there a list of what type of sound is better...ie...is THX better than DD etc...

Two things I don't understand is the "SP A/B" button seems to change between surround sound, sound from the front speakers and no sound, whats the point? Surely you would just leave it at 5.1?

Also, is there a way I can have my skyTV come on and just be controlled as if the amp isn't even there? I thought it could pass through the amp if its in standby, for times when I need to be quieter in the house.

Cheers guys, prob bound to ask more questions but loving my new addition and its great value for money, the dark knight on blu-ray never sounded so good!

Your PS3, Apple TV & Xbox will all work through HDMI. For some reason Sky dont allow the 5.1 surround sound to pass through HDMI hence the need for the Optical cable.

Have a read through the user manual regarding the sound modes, it tells you what each one is for and what it will do.

What I do with the Sky+HD is have the HDMI cable going from the Sky box to TV then the optical cable from the Sky box to the Onkyo system. That way when you have the Onkyo off you get the sound from your TV and when you have the Onkyo on for 5.1 just turn the volume of the TV down or mute it.
However there is an option to allow sound to pass through the Onkyo system when it is off which I use with my PS3 when I dont want to wake the missus up!!
You will find it in the on menu screen. There is no need to do this if you set-up the Sky box the way I have it.

Hope i was of help

OK, new S5405 owner here.
Spent yesterday afternoon setting it all up and I'm impressed.
First time I've had the Sky system playing in surround - loved watching just normal TV programms with it on.

Anyway, I'm left with a couple of questions.

First, I wanted to really test the system out so decided to run a Blu-Ray from my PS3 so I could experience true DolbyHD.
So I just happened to grab my Matrix trilogy and slapped in Reloaded which apparently has DolbyHD.
It did sound great, this I'm not arguing.
However when I did Receiver>Display to scroll through the displays I was expecting to see the word "Dolby" somewhere.
However instead I had:
Multich
MCH PCM 5.1
At no point on the display did I see the word "Dolby".
I get the impression from the manual that I should see on the display whatever sound standard is being used.
So how can I confirm I'm actually getting DolbyHD and if from my displays above I'm not what should I check?

Secondly the manual also indicates you can rename the inputs, so Game could be called PS3 and Cab/Sat could be called Sky.
However it doesn't tell you where you can make these changes.
Anyone tell me which menu and where you can do this?

Thanks for your time - first of my two questions certainly most important.
