No luck with Win XP either. So any one with any ideas? How do I find out which com port does the AVR want? Or can I change the port Updater is connecting to?

Well, the com port allocation was easily solved. One can change the port from the com(c) button on the updater. But it has been a no go. I keep getting the runtime error 8020. Any ideas folks?

Good news, folks! Tried Windows XP pro again. Uninstalled the cable driver that I had downloaded from the web (thinking it will be the latest) and installed the one from the mini CD that had come with the cable. Bingo! I am now on 1.5. And my Audyssey settings haven't changed.

Thanks Stuart and Namuk for you help.

Really? Would the new firmware interpret Audyssey analysis differently, you think? It is quite a pain to run Audyssey, I feel, but if you think it will make a difference, I am willing to give it a go this week-end.

Thanks again, mate!

no the firmware update will not disturb your Audyssey settings, but if you have not done it for a while your best doing so , as thing move in the room your in this can throw off Audyssey .

also you did do a DSP update that may not change your amp Audyssey settings but it may do to the sound but thats just me thinking like this, i just re-run it again not long after the update i did mate.

Edit : Stuart has a point check the DSP version and post the DSP1 number here.

That was a long time ago I had to run audyssey all over again after that. But the FW update has left it intact. Do I need to run it again? I haven't really had the time to test it for movies, but it sounds OK for music and TV/PVR.

My DSP update went well Namuk, without a hitch and the DSP number changed to the new one. I checked with the update info over here and the new number is correct. But that update wiped out all the settings, and I re-ran the Audyssey after that.

Not sure if it has been covered before, but is there ANY way to get the Zone 2 speakers to output DIGITAL inputs?.
I have Acoustic Energy AELITE 7.1 system (2 front and centre. wall mounted surrounds so basically all matching) BUT I want to connect Tanny Reveal monitors so I can switch to proper, neutral monitoring when I am video editing.
The 876 has high quality Burr Brown DAC's and I MUST be able to use it with a HDMI input, surely? Is this covered by a more recent firmware update? Or is it just not possible with the hardware? Seems crazy to me.

Hi guys. I'm moving to a new home soon and my Onkyo 876 is coming with me . I am keen to ensure that when I eventually setup and calibrate my sound system, it sounds as good as possible.

I understand that there have been a couple of updates to the unit's operational and DSP firmware so I just wanted to check what the latest versions are of each and how people are updating them - send away or upgrade at home?

I heard on these forums a while back that the microphone supplied with most of our 876's is actually the wrong one (I have the ACM1 but should have the ACM1h) - http://www.avforums.com/forums/onkyo...eck-yours.html. I sent an e-mail to Onkyo but didn't get a response so just wondered if any of you have had any success with getting the correct microphone for calibration.

If you have the one with the gold coloured connector, you need to change it. If it is a silver coloured connector( the part that plugs into the AVR), you are OK. In such cases, it was the box that was mislabeled.

Here is the thread devoted to the DSP and FW update:

http://www.avforums.com/forums/onkyo...p-updates.html

Best

Thanks. I have the silver jack plug on my microphone so there's no need to change it. Regarding the firmware page you have linked to, it appears to be for '5 generation models. I am reluctant to use the 875 firmware on my 876 model despite their similarities.

Where should I go for 876 firmware?

Try the Onkyo_876_886_9.9_FW_104_105_DSP.zip from

Thanks. I eventually downloaded the archive and have looked at the instructions. There's appears to be only one update for the 876 and that's the main firmware v1.04. Will the DSP update not work with it or is it just for the 906?

I guess what I need now is a USB to RS232 cable. Does anybody have one I could borrow?

There are two updates in that archive in different directory paths:
876_Z22A.mot which is 1.04 and DHC99_116a.mot which is 1.05.
To confuse things, it also contains another zip-archive which again
contains the DHC99_116a.mot update.
The same firmware works for a number of Onkyo and Integra models.

If you are around Manchester, you can borrow mine. Mailing it and then mailing it back will cost about as much as a new one from Amazon.

Does anyone know what the changes are in these later firmwares? I have 1.01 but don't want to update if there are no advantages!

There are no official docs but
some experiences better/quicker HDMI handshaking and the 1.04
enabled some discrete remote control commands to be used with
Universal remotes, such as the Logitech Harmony One:
ISF Mode
D21E 50 90 Custom
D21E 50 91 Day
D21E 50 92 Night
D21E 50 93 ISF Mode(Wrap-Around Up)

Audyssey MultEQ XT
D21E 50 8E Off
D21E 50 8F On
D2AC DF Audyssey MultEQ XT(Wrap-Around Up)

Dynamic EQ
D21E 50 8B Off
D21E 50 8C On
D21E 50 8D Dynamic EQ(Wrap-Around Up)

Dynamic Volume
D21E 50 80 Off
D21E 50 81 Light
D21E 50 82 Medium
D21E 50 83 Heavy
D21E 50 84 Dynamic Volume(Wrap-Around Up)

Very handy indeed.
Note: you need to send some very long hex codes to the logitech support so
that they can add them to your 876's database before you can assign the
commands to specific buttons.

The 876 does not support 3d, so if you want to watch 3d with it then yes, you need to get a new receiver which supports 3d (hdmi 1.4)

I have an 876 and a 3D TV. Are you going to be using your PS3 as the 3D Blu-ray player? Is it an old PS3 or new slim version?

The reason I ask is because if you have an old PS3 (phat) then it cannot output full HD 3D and HD audio codecs at the same time. Therefore, even if you get a new amp such as the Onkyo 608 that can handle 3D, you will still only be able to get one or the other.

So, you can still watch 3D movies with an old PS3, a 3D TV and an Onkyo 876 - Just plug the PS3 directly into the TV via HDMI (doesn't have to be HDMI 1.4, HDMI 1.3 works perfectly), then connect an optical cable from the PS3 to the 876. Then set the PS3 to output audio via optical. Then you can get Dolby Digital / DTS sound with full HD 3D. This is what I do at the moment.

I think the new PS3 (slim) can handle both full HD 3D and HD audio at the same time, although I am not 100% sure of this.

Another option, if you are happy with your 876, is to get a 3D Blu-ray player that has 2 HDMI outputs. With one of these, you can connect 1 HDMI directly to the 3D TV, and the other to the 876, thus getting full HD 3D and HD audio.

Just seen this thread after having a 876 for a few years, the HDMI handshake delay has always bugged me so I think I'll try the firmware update (I'm still on 1.01) to see if it helps

I'm not having any luck with the links for the firmware update files - any kind soul like to help me out

Dymanic vol same question. im getting confussed with all the options. Also when playing a DTS master audio or DolyTureHD track is it best to use THX mode? or just the source modes, ie DTSMA??? any advice would be most welcomed... Thanks

Yes. I think I still have the file on my computer. I could probably send it to you. I never got round to uploading it to my amplifier because I don't have the correct cable. Do you?
