Going to borrow a couple of other brand HDMI's to try out and see if it's a receiver fault or the cable (think it is a receiver fault as this particular QED cable I have tested in other items).
Now that's cheered me up with all the negativity about this amp, it's nice to see that it's the cables... I recently had TWO good quality HDMI cables start "speckling"... tiny white dots appear... missus can't see them, but I know there there, so went out and replaced cables... perfect since... HDMI is one dodgy tech IMHO... the handshaking however on this amp has been faultless, dont' forget I've got mine outted to a two way splitter for TV and PJ... and it's still be perfect!

Don't know what there policy is but its an electrical item so surely these have a years warranty anyway?. Looking at the box i got it in its a but suspect as it looks like it has a second bit of tape on the top which makes me think its been used and returned before.
maybe you did get a secondhand unit, when i got mine it had the one clear piece of tape going across the box.

i think that you can sometimes tell if something is secondhand because if it has been opened before you can see the residue from the cardboard on the tape and the box would look a little bit taty from where someone may have opened the tape across the box before.

although i'm sure amazon wouldn't and shouldn't sell a customer a refurbished unit.

Hi figolovechild,

I agree with markiedee it may be a refurb / return. Mine had a single piece of tape sealing the box. The bits in the box (remotes etc) were also in plastic bags sealed with a single piece of tape.

Tried another cable and it works fine! I would just like to point out that the "dodgy" cable is only dodgy when attached to the receiver. From PS3 or DVD player it is fine. It may be constructed slightly differently to others which makes it dodgy with this particular receiver. Definately worth noting if someone else has this issue.

So.... onto full setup etc and fine tweaking. No doubt I'll have some other questions!!

Got a couple of quick questions.

When connected via BD input (ps3) it is meant to show up as 'Portable' on the receiver screen?

Also, what is a good volume level generally? I seem to be at around -20db for good loud sound.

One last thing, during speaker set-up you can change the volume level of each speaker. At the moment my fronts are +5db and my centre and surrounds + 1.5. I'm running my fronts through the Sony's pre-out and into a dedicated 2-channel amp in power mode.

Basically is it bad to have the speakers with added db in the settings menu? (or should they be in the -db or at 0db for best sound?).

Cheers,
Simon.

Hmmm. It does say BD initially but then when the PS3 is turned on and audio is coming through it switches to saying 'Portable'. The HDMI light is still on, the lpcm decoding light is on, etc. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

I'm wondering what is the best speaker package to combine with my 2400ES (it's currently hooked up to a Sony SA-VE305 speaker package from the old days which doesn't do it justice). I'm considering the following options:
  • Canton Movie 150QX
  • Wharfedale Diamond 10 HCP
  • Q Acoustics 2000 Cinema Package
  • KEF KHT2005.3
  • Monitor Audio BX2 AV Package
Any suggestions?

If this was the case, would Amazon be breaking the law stating it as new???

Depends.

If the item was supplied under the Amazon name as new (but was not) I suppose they could be liable. If it was sold through Amazon on behalf of a third party company, then Amazon may not be liable.

I got my amp via Amazon and am sure it was brand spanking new.

All in all a great amp.

Like sparkie1984 I have tannoys and I think they sound pretty good with this amp, better than my old yamaha amp. As far as I can gather this amp is 'bright' and tannoys are not which means they even each other out.

Your list looks good, I would suggest if any have been described as 'bright' they may not be a good match for the 2400ES. But I am no expert, and you may prefer a lively bright sound from your system.

Having set mine up in 6.1 configuration, it sounds stunning.

Will try CDs in the morning but can anyone tell, how high the volume reading will go beyond 0dB? I see mine running at -12dB on the display.

Well it definitely has a second strip of tape on the top of box. I didnt think much of it at the time but its not working properly. The Amazon website did say it was new when i bought it but its getting replaced anyway. I do realise its a faulty unit so cant wait for the replacement to come now.

I'm so happy for you figo that your getting a replacement hopefully you can enjoy it this time around.

one i would suggest when you get it though and thats when you hook up your speakers have a listen to them before using the auto calabration mic and see how they sound, if it's not to your liking then give the mic ago.

i only intend to use the mic myself once i got the full 5.1 speaker situation sorted but once again happy to hear that your getting a replacement.

well, lets see if i can get some help with my problem in a differente way, does anyone here use the bk gemini? if so, can you tell me what the gain used because i still think that mine is very strange, i have the front speak at +5 and the gemini ate -6, using the test tone its 8/10 db more then the rest of the speakers (so, louder!) but using it with bds, concerts or movies, the sub seems that doesnt exist and its more 10db than the speakers, with my old yama the sub was more 1/2db mas i "felt"it listening to movies....

Hi shiseido,

Your issue is a strange one. I don't have the same sub, but can't see why yours shouldn't be working properly.

Does the sub have a crossover control?

If so, perhaps it is set tool low.

Is the gain knob on the subwoofer turned up to halfway? I was under the impression that the AVR Xover bypasses the subwoofers Xover connected at line level. I have BK XLS400 and with this have gain on my AVR to +7.5, fronts at +4.5, centre +3.5.

I noticed that the auto calibration on my 2400ES has some sort of problem setting up the FR (sets it to -4.5 instead of +4.5 like the FL so have to manually re-adjust) but that seems to be only affecting me at the moment!

i have the crossover of the gemini off (maximum) has ive always used with my last 2 yama receivers. the volume is not at half, is more or less at 40%, if i used at half, instead of y«using the gain at -6 maby i had to use at -8. im thinking that the sony has some problem with the low level of the sub i dont use the high level now

Getting this for Xmas. Its been sat round my Mums for about a month as she ordered it when it was £199.99 on Amazon.

Got to say having read this thread I'm slightly worried. Seems that quite a few people think they have faulty units. Im not going to be able to test mine for another 5 weeks so will have no chance of a refund...just hope they still have stock!!

Don't worry I'm sure it will be OK.

Most of my 'issues' with the amp were due to me being thick and not reading the manual (which by the way is as bad as everyone says - takes three or four reads to get into).

For example, I was horrified when I first did an auto setup of my speakers when the rears produced no sound. The answer? I had wired them to the wrong connectors on the amp. 'Surround Rear' on this amp does not mean the rear surround for a 5.1 speaker configuration. Confused? you will be.

Just trawl this thread and it's previous editions, there is tons of helpful advice.

Matt, don't worry, fella. Do what I did ...

memorise the manual before you get the thing out of the box!

once you boot it up, it'll seem like an old friend - you'll be so familiar!

That's not a bad idea. Will try and convince my Mum to let me dig it out before Xmas!

If not I wonder if there is a PDF of it knocking about?

After initially requesting a refund from Amazon I rang them yesterday to ask if i could have a replacement instead, and it was delivered this morning, Thankfully it appears to be okay, no clicking other than the single one after turning it on, and its managed to retain the FM Radio presets so far so it looks like my first one was faulty.

You can download it from the Superfi page, as well as Sonys own site i imagine.
