STR DG-820 PASS THRU..And auto setup

Hi guys.

i have a sony STR-DG820, and as per usual, ive lost the ruddy manual.

Im Wondering how i set the pass-thru. I understand this as : when the unit is in standby, it passes one of the HDMI signals straight through - from input to out put.....so i can still watch sky for instance wth the unit on standby ???

Also, can someone explain how the room setup function works, i understand that it can calculate the distance from the mic to each speaker, and as such calculate any delay required, but how can it set the crossover - it only ever "beeps" when it is setting up -so it can't determine what frequency my speakers go to...and when it needs to send signals to the subwoofer.....

anyone ?

The 820 (in fact I don't think any sony) doesn't do passthru in standby.

You don't get 5.1 audio through Sky HD's HDMI connection - you need to use optical or coaxial for that. Unless you need to have the Sky ran through the amp (lack of HDMI connections on the TV or whatever), I'd just connect the audio to the amp and have the video via HDMI going to the TV. This will allow you to watch with the amp off.

I have the STR-DG820, and when running through the Auto Calibration there is a series of sounds played through each speaker. First off, a tune plays jumping quickly between all speakers. Then it goes round every speaker playing a quickly oscillating noise (best way I can describe it) which I imagine it uses to get the frequency response. It finishes up by playing a series of 'thud' noises out of the sub.

I've used the speaker distance settings which it has came up with during the auto calibration, but to be honest I've always set up the crossover frequency manually. I'd check the specs for your speakers and do this same, setting it just above the lower frequency value it can handle. 80Hz is fairly standard for bookshelf speakers.

Edit - Just noticed in your sig that you have floorstanders. The auto-setup may pick these up as full range speakers, disabling the internal crossover function. That's what it did with my front speakers which are also floorstanders. In this case, you probably will have to set it up manually.

yeah, i think the floorstanders confuse the crap out of it - both my fronts and rears go down to 35hz at - 6db.

Best i buy a SPL meter in order to set up my monolith !

You don't need to use an SPL meter and manually set the levels, you need only manually set the speakers set to LARGE (Full Range) as being SMALL and then enter appropriate crossover settings for them. This has no effect on the actual levels as determined by AUTO CAL.

I must be missing something.

How can the AV receiver determine the dropoff point of my speakers, and therefore decide frequency to crossover.

it only emits a series of beeps - in order to calculate distance to each loaction, and uses that calculate delays+what not.

I can only presume it " Guesses "

I'll be buying a spl meter in order to set up my Monolith - best way to find out where it needs to be in my room

As I said in my previous post, my STR-DG820 plays more than just a single series of beebs. The series of noises it plays back are more or less the same on my older STR-DG910 as well.

Not sure why you are just getting a simple series of beeps.

No chance you could video it for me - or for the matter, just record the audio.

Do you get a long frequency sweep, or a warble?

Here's a recording of it. Never attached an .mp3 before so I hope it works/plays OK.
