I bought a laptop last week,I connected an hdmi into the receiver. It now seems to conflict with the skybox and other sat box that i have.I would have thought it would be pretty straight forward with no connection issues.I'm using a Panasonic TV.Any help would be appreciated.Thanks.

A touch embarrassing then when it came back from repair with the note saying all they had to do to fix it was re-enable the speaker output using the "speakers" button.
Lol yeah it turns out it was the speakers button thanks for that I'm gonna blame that on the mrs dusting it!

After it has been switched on for a while it starts to making a buzzing noise that comes out the speakers so I thought it might be on its way out

For othes with the same issue, how much did it cost to repair, who did you go though (their address), and turn around time, and did everything work correctly after getting it back?

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks
Mine was covered by Richer Sounds supercare but they still had to send it back to Sony to be fixed (or at least one of Sonys licences repair centres). That took six weeks but it's still not right and I've had to send it back again It looks like it was fixed with newer parts that are not compatible with my model as when I power down all my speakers made a popping noise even ones on my computer plugged into and input! Their were no notes on the repair but it looks like it's had a new power supply. it seems they had cocked up something else inside as well as even with all my speakers set the same they we all at different volumes even auto cal wouldn't correct this.
Still I have to point out it's Sony that have cocked this up, Richer sounds have been great with me and I currently have a loan unit. Hopefully it'll come back fixed properly not cowboy fashion!

Good luck with yours if you decided to get it fixed!

Hi
First post here. Had my STR-DH800 for a year or so and its been fine. We decided we wanted to use it all the time rather than just for movies so I've changed the connections.
I have a Sony BD350 into HDMI1
I have a SkyHD box into HDMI3 and the Optical in
I have the HDMI out to a Sony Bravia tv
All works fine and I can even control it all from my Sky handset.
However, if I have the DH800 on SAT (I have HDMI3 assigned to SAT as well as the optical to get the 5.1 from the Sky box via optical), then turn the system off, whe I turn on again it defaults to HDMI1 or HDMI3 whichever was used last. It doesnt seem to remember that SAT was is use last.
Trivial, but annoying.
Is there a fix ?
Many thanks in advance.

I turned my DH800 on earlier and it wouldnt come on. Turned out that the fuse had gone again. This is the second time ive replaced fuses in two months. Just a dodgy fuse or something else?

Hey everyone. Has anyone here who owns or have owned one of these amps ever had problems with the HDMI out?

Cheers.

This could be anything from the electricity supply itself (power surges?) to a fault with the system. If you are confident that your electric supply is stable then I would be tempted to get the system checked out.

Are you sure about the HDMI cables? Your set up would be three cables. One from the Blu Ray to the unit and another from the SKY Box to the unit and a final one from the unit to the TV.

I'd forget about recording via the mini disc. The amp has no optical out and analogue outputs only convey analogue sourced inputs. Devices connected via digital inputs will not output audio via the amp's analogue audio outputs (Tape Loop).

I've just got sky for the first time and have a sky+ hd box connected to my dh800 via HDMI. Problem is, there's no surround sound... I've checked the sound settings in the sky box and Dolby D is selected so I'm not sure why I'm only getting stereo. Any ideas?

That's because the Sky box utilises the optical lead only for Dolby. You will need to fit an optical cable as well as the HDMI and assign the audio to the optical lead. Have a search on this thread on how to set the Sky Box up.

Leaving it set as AUTO will give you Dolby Digital on the channels that transmit it.

I’m unsure if the amp switches back to audio over HDMI if it’s not Dolby digital, but the set up works fine for me.
Thanks, this works for me to get 5.1 audio from my sky+ HD box, although I varied slightly by using BD optical audio input instead of SAT.

Hi everyone, I'm hoping can help me a little.

I the Sony STR-DH800 SKY+ HD and a Panasonic TX37-LZD80.

I have it set up so the sky remote controls the volume on the amp. But... About a week ago it stopped control the amp volume and didn't turn off when I turned the tv off. Yesterday it decided to work again and now it doesn't again.

Has anyone else experienced this and do they have a solution.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

Noob help for volume dips...

Hi.I've had this amp for a few months now and I'm only just getting my head around set up. It's sounding really good with my system but I'm noticing that the sound seems to drop out during dramatic explosions etc when watching back via Sky+ HD. Is there some sort of protection system built in? I've scoured the manual but can't make sense of it relating to this issue.
Anyone know?

Thanks (please be gentle....)

Yes that is correct. I used to own a H820 and it cut out occasionally in the same way. Presumably to protect the speakers etc... I can't remember how I solved this but I think there is a setting. Check the manual.

Or alternatively turn it down

'turn it down'.... Hmm no I don't seem to be able to process that phrase. Ha

Actually it's only turned up to about 35 on the dial when it seems to turn itself down for a second or two. Just when you expect the sound to hit you in the face (mid explosion) it just cuts the volume. Not muted but just quiet. Too quiet. The sub is not effected. They still do the job but without the percussive bangs and crashes it just sounds disjointed.
Anymore advice would be very much appreciated...

It is called "protector". Unfortunately you cant switch it off as far as I can see from the manual. It auto kicks in to avoid damaging your speakers.

Here is a link about it.

How to Fix a Sony Receiver Protector Error | eHow.co.uk

Perhaps your levels need adjusting.

Cheers for that. It's not like the sound cuts, it just goes quiet when you expect it to be louder.... I'll play with the levels.
Auto calibration has been done. Would that set the levels though? Or is that for distance?...

Calibration would set levels and distance. You can manually adjust the levels through the menu if you please. Although it is not as straight forward as some amps since it wont play a test tone through a single speaker. The test tones loop around all the speakers automatically.

Tried it at the same (and higher) volumes today using a blue ray. No issues at all. Rocked my proverbials rights off....
Could it be the Sky HD recordings are somehow clipped? That would be a happier explanation....

Hi

I need to clarify something. Earlier in this thread it says that a Sky HD box does not send a 5.1 signal via the HDMI. You have to use an optical cable.

I'm getting a cable this week. Is there an easy step by step explanation of how to set this up?

If I run the optical cable as well as the HDMI, and then assign the HDMI input to optical. Is that it?

I'm finding this very confusing.

Thanks anyone for any help you can give.

Similar problem to yours solved but not using "assign"

Hi mothroth, I have read of the problem with the Sky box in other forums. I don't have Sky but I may have a solution that may work for you.

I wanted to connect an up-scaling DVD player to my HDTV. I had run out of HDMI connectors on the amplifier (they are being used by Humax PVR, Virgin HD box, PS3 and XBOX 360) so could not connect my Panasonic up-scaling DVD to the HDTV via the amp. After trying other solutions I eventually connected the DVD to a second (HDMI2) port on the TV (the first one being used by the amplifier). I then connected the optical cable from the DVD player to the optical DVD connector on the amp.

Now when I wish to watch a DVD I select HDMI2 on the TV, for great picture quality, and select DVD on the amp for 5.1 sound.

There may be more elegant solutions to your problems using the "assign" function on the amp which other forum members may suggest but the above solution may be usable by you.

I am interested in how you resolve this as I may go to Sky some day.

Good luck,

malcolmg

Cheers for that. Your suggestion makes a lot more sense than 'naming inputs' etc.... I'm getting a little lost with all this AV talk.
I'll try that out this weekend and post an update.
This forum is great. Thanks again.
