surround sound during normal tv viewing

Hi all, I have a sony dh800 amp, and was wondering will the hdmi cable carry surround sound in hd and 5.1,during normal sky tv viewing, i have a shy hd box, the home cinema system I have is the Kef 1005.2, or do I need an optical cable??, as well. Or would adjusting my eq on the amp???. Not even plugged it in yet, waiting till have the whole day to do it, which will be on Friday, can't wait!!!.
Sorry if I sound a bit simple, lol. But getting better!!!!!!

Cheers.

For DD5.1 audio from the SKY HD box then you will need an additional optical connection from the box to the STRDH800. SKY HD doesn't output DD5.1 via HDMI. You'll also need to turn DD5.1 output on in the SKY box's settings. You'll only get DD5.1 when watching programmes that have Dolby Digital encoded audio. When watching programmes lacking DD5.1 audio, use Dolby ProLogic to create pseudo surround.

When you attach both the HDMI and optical lead to the STRDH800 from the SKY box, use the SAT HDMI and optical inputs on the amp. Press SAT on the remote and then INPUT MODE. From the options in the INPUT MODE menu, cycle to the option OPT. This will ensure that the audio coming in from the SKY box via the optical input is assigned to the video being input to the SAT HDMI input. The INPUT MODE setting will be stored by the amp for the SAT source.
