Hi everyone,
Recently purchased new Panasonic Plasma. Trying to get everything working properly.

Basic set up right now: Digital Cable box HDMI to Receiver (Sony), Sony PS3 HDMI to Receiver, Receiver HDMI out to Plasma.

Have 5.1 surround sound, and Receiver does surround sound if playing radio, but when watching TV, sound just goes thru Plasma TV. Not sure if there's settings on TV I need to change. On PS3, same thing - just get sound through TV. I tried connecting optical cable on PS3 to receiver and changed PS3 sound settings to optical, but got no sound.

Any idea what I am doing wrong?

You will have to turn the TV speakers off in the TV Seup menus but more importantly you will have to hook up either an analogue or optical from TV to a spare input on the Receiver.

HDMI only takes signals to the TV and not vice versa.

What Sony amp do you have?
This may be a silly question but does your amp do audio over HDMI? If it does have you go the setting in the amp right to extract the sound from the HDMI lead.
I take it you are not getting sound from the PS3 and cable box and not trying to get sound from the TV internal tuner?

Yes sorry I overlooked the last sentence. but you do still need to connect the TV to get surround sound from TV tuner.

Thanks guys. For the record, receiver is a Sony SDR-GD510. I removed the optical from the PS3, then connected it from Receiver to TV and got my surround sound !

Now I can not get any sound from PS3. I tried running HDMI from PS3 right to TV. Receiver has another optical (SAT In) - do I need to run optical from PS3 to receiver?

I'm so confused .

Not all TV's output sound from HDMI via their optical output. If the Receiver doesn't do sound from HDMI, then yes connect another optical from PS3 to The 510.

Hmm...plugged optical from PS3 to receiver, but getting no sound. Could not get sound plugging HDMI from PS3 to TV either.

OK. Got everything working. I forgot to change on receiver to SAT to switch to PS3 optical. It's just a little confusing with all the remotes and settings to switch back and forth between TV and PS3! Will have to try to simplify that. Thanks.
