HELP - Getting 5.1 Sound From PS3 And Questions About Dolby True HD & DTS-HD
Hi
I have a PS3 which connected via optical cable to 5.1 Samsung Home Theater System (not Supporting Dolby True HD and DTS-HD, but supporting standard DTS and Dolby Digital).
When I'm playing games, PS3 plays 5.1 surround sound without any problems, but I only get 2 channel stereo when I'm watching Blu-Ray Movies.
Do I need to upgrade my Home Theater system which supports Dolby True HD and DTS-HD to get 5.1 sound in Blu-Rays on PS3?
If I don't need to upgrade the system and can have a 5.1 surround sound, how can I do it and what format will I'm getting from Blurays which have only Dolby True HD or DTS-HD on it? Will it be Standard DTS or Dolby Digital quality?
So I'm curious about is it possible to get Standard DTS sound from Blu-Rays which have only DTS-HD and to get Standard Dolby Digital sound from the Blu-Rays which only have Dolby True HD?
Thanks...

No Blu-ray disc has only Dolby True HD. All Blu-rays musts include Dolby Digital or DTS audio. These formats are a mandatory requirement. In fact it is only the HD formats that are optional.
You should still be able to get either DTS or Dolby Digital 5.1 audio when playing Blu-ray discs. Discs with TrueHD audio must also include DD5.1. DTS-HD Master Audio includes a core DTS audio stream that will be used if the HD format cannot be decoded.
I'd suggest the problem lies within your PS3's audio settings. Configure the PS3's setting for audio output via optical and set them appropriately for your amplifiers capabilities.

Re: HELP - Getting 5.1 Sound From PS3 And Questions About Dolby True HD & DTS-HD
The PS3 has a setting for what to output when playing non-HD sound tracks / non-HDMI outputs. The correct setting is Bitstream. The wrong setting is LPCM. You have selected the wrong setting.
LPCM when applied to non-HD soundtracks or non-HDMI outputs means forced stereo LPCM. The use of the term LPCM in this context is merely to cause confusion with the term LPCM when used in the context of HD codecs (over HDMI), where it means decoded multichannel sound. And if you're confused by this and have thrown your hands up in despair, don't worry, it drives us all nuts.

Ok then, I don't have to upgrade my system if I can get standard DTS or Dolby Digital from Blu-Rays on PS3. I will change the audio settings and look what will happen. Thanks...

Re: HELP - Getting 5.1 Sound From PS3 And Questions About Dolby True HD & DTS-HD
I am having the same issue. I am getting stereo on bluerays that only have the 5.1 dts-hd master audio. On blu rays with 5.1 dolby digital i am getting the 5.1 signal but still 2.1 on the dts-hd. I have changed all the settings from bitstream and PCM and back again. The results range from 2.1 to nothing. I am connected to a Onkyo receiver via an optical cable. help me cause it sucks to watch awesome movies with crappy sound. And I have also tried all the audio tracks on the blu ray and there are only dts-hd choices not dolby digital 5.1, except for the spanish track and that comes in 5.1. So if only I understood spanish. ugh help me out this has been going on since the update!

Does your Onkyo have DTS decoding. Discs with DTS-MA have a DTS track for older amps, depending on its age you might have an amp that only does Dolby Digital, what model Onkyo is it.

Re: HELP - Getting 5.1 Sound From PS3 And Questions About Dolby True HD & DTS-HD
Its a TX DS474 and it says its dts ready but i think that means nothing except it can play dts if your player has the decoder. I am just sad that I have a nice 5.1 surround sound setup and an ok lcd screen and I get great clear 5.1 menus, previews, and anything that isnt the main feature. There I get a sucky 2.1 stereo mess... :*( I just got off the phone with Sony and they couldnt help me

Re: HELP - Getting 5.1 Sound From PS3 And Questions About Dolby True HD & DTS-HD
Well unfortunately from what I have read about your amp it only decodes Dolby Digital, so for you to be able to enjoy DTS in any format on it you need an external DTS decoder to enjoy the 6 channel sound.
A manual for it can be found here if you don't have one.

Re: HELP - Getting 5.1 Sound From PS3 And Questions About Dolby True HD & DTS-HD
You can't get the hd codecs via optical because it does not carry enough bandwidth, only via hdmi.It will reduce the signal to 1.5mb DTS.
The only way to get it via the phat PS3 as it cannot do bitstream hd is to let the PS3 do the decoding rather than the amp and pass it via LPCM to the amp via hdmi.
You will not see the amp displaying the hd codec it will just show MPCM or Multi.

Re: HELP - Getting 5.1 Sound From PS3 And Questions About Dolby True HD & DTS-HD
Thank you so very much for the help. So what i am understanding is thatI need to get a new receiver that has an HDMI input so I can use the LPCM setting to get the 5.1 from a blu ray with DTS-MA?
