Hello All,

I am quite new to the Sound setup.

I am thinking of buying the Denon 1920 AV, coupled with Tannoy speakers

2 x TANNOY MERCURY F4 CUSTOM SPEAKERS (PAIR)
TANNOY MERCURY F4 CUSTOM SPEAKERS (PAIR) - available from Superfi UK Visit http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/product_id/3967 for details
As my 2 floor standing speakers

1 x Tannoy Mercury FC for my center,

and then I'll need a sub? And some more speakers??

Also, does the Denon go with the Tannoy speakers??

Sorry for my ignorance!!

I used to partner Denon with Tannoy Mercury speakers (older models) and it sounded great. The Tannoys are vastly under-rated in my opinion.

If you want a full 5.1 setup, then yes you will need 2 x fronts (F4), centre (FC) and then 2 x rears and a sub. These could obviously be the Mercury F1 or smaller FR speakers for the rears although you can pretty much add any speakers as the rears as it is not that important to match them to the fronts (unless you're using 5ch/7ch stereo multi-channel for music). Obviously you will want an aesthetic match to ensure they look right. Again, with the subwoofer, it isn't that important to match it and to this end, it's often recommended to deviate from the manufacturer's sub and go with a specialist sub. BK make subs at various price points that are well regarded.

Tannoy speakers would not be the best match for use with a Denon amp. Denon are warm sounding and the Tannoy speakers have a warm attitude toward their output.

Less warm, brighter speakers would suite the Denon.

The Q Accoustics 1010i or Wharfdale Diamond 9 HCP would be good choices, but the Monitor Audio Vector AV would be even better.

Look at Monitor Audio speakers rather than Tannoy for speakers for the AVR1910 ;)

The MA Bronze BR5 would be better with the Denon AVR1910 than the Tannoy Mercury F4's in my opinion. The Monitor Audio Bronze BR5 AV package would include all the speakers you need and you'd get them cheaper as a package than buying the items individually.

I already have the Tannoy F4's - would the sony amps be better than the yams or denons then?

The Sony STRDA2400ES would be better with the Tannoy f4s than the Denon AVR1910, the Yamaha RXV565 or the RXV765.

The Denon is a better amp than the Sony though, just not the best choice for use with those speakers.

Monitor Audio BR2 5.1 Speaker System as its a bit cheaper at £800 odd pounds

I predominantly wanted a surround sound system...after hearing the setup in Super Fi and surprisingly in Comet....

I had budgeted £400-500 for speakers and an AV receiver, but after looking on here....the costs just goes up!

I don't really want to spend £500 on stuff, only to upgrade later...which is why I'm considering the denon 1920, at £450 is a fair bit of dosh...

and then speakers which Dante very kindly suggested does look the bees knees but at £1000!

And then I guess I need some cables!

so, question is

1. Denon and speakers - Modern monitor ones would be best...

2. Do I want to spend that much on speakers??

How about the speakers I posted a link to above your post:
Monitor Audio R45 AV Speaker Package

or these:
Monitor Audio Radius R270 AV45 Pack 2

or any of the packages here:
Monitor Audio

Any of these would go well with the Denon AVR1910

I have the system that you are looking at but with the 1909 and a kef kube 1 sub.

Its a great setup except i should have gone for a better sub, although the misses does not agree at 2 in the morning!!

The F4s are great and look fantastic with the covers removed, they sound even better after a few hours.

I would not let the opinion of the F4s are not great with the denon put you of the system, get superfi to demo you the system, in my opinion its pretty good although i must admit i got my speakers from Superfi the week before they doubled in price so slightly biased.

Anyway have fun checking it all out and don't forget to cost in the price of decent cables.

Would there be a big improvement if I were to buy these and use them with my 1908 and mabey sell the jamo's?

Actually, probably not. The mid range would be slighly better, but they are rated well below what your AVR1908 can output. I'd probably have to say that they are not even a good choice for use withthe AVR1910 or even the AVR1610. My mistake for suggesting the MA package and I should've done a little bit more homework prior to poster them as a suitable package.

The Monitor Audio Radius R270 AV packs would be more suitable, but unfortunately more expensive too.

There's the Q Acoustics 1010i package for £400. Although not as good as many of the speakers you'd get from Monitor Audio, the package would/should be a marked improvement of the Jamos.
