What is Lossless PCM

What is Lossless PCM

Hello Guys, I was looking at few Blue Ray Discs in blockbusters on the back of nearly each of them Discs on Audio it says Lossless PCM, what is it . is it different from Dolby TrueHD or Dolby Digital plus. thanks.

Lossless PCM (16bit @ 48KHz) is very similar to Audio CD (16bit @ 44.1KHz). Unlike almost all other formats, no compression is applied which would reduce the sound quality.

On the Casino Royale BluRay disc for example, the PCM audio bitrate is 4.6Mbit/s with 5.1 channels.

In terms of pure sound quality Lossless PCM is therefore better than everything else except Dolby True HD (potentially up to 24bit @ 96 kHz, using lossless compression).
In practice I expect some 'True HD' tracks will use the same bitrate as Lossless PCM - ie identical quality.
