Newbie question for new 5.1 system

Hey all.

I need a new 5.1 sound system for my X-Box 360, PC, TV & maybe DVD or freeview. I was looking at the all in one Lojitech Z-5500 but people are saying I migh tbe better getting a receiver and speakers for slightly more. Would it be worth it? The Z-5500 is only £200?

Cheers.

Re: Newbie question for new 5.1 system

You need to ask what you are willing to pay for the seperates first as if you are only willing to pay say £100 more for amp and speakers you won't get a good system even if secondhand for £300.

If you go the secondhand route a reasonable budget for an amp is £250 (older models of the denon 3803, 280? (any with dolby prologic 2) or pioneer 2011, maybe a 2014i if ur lucky. Then for the speakers (not including sub) to start you could go with the original Kef eggs 2005.1 at say £250 secondhand for a 5.1 setup. Then a reasonable sub rel quake at £180 or MJ acoustic 50 (maybe £150) or Kef 2500 sub is ok. Rel 100 so all in with wires to connect you are looking at £700 minimum for 5.1 speakers, sub, amp and wires to connect. So you need to ask is £500 more worth it? For me the answer is yes for you it may not be. Note this is just an example suggestion for a starter but good reasonable setup.
