What amp to buy?

Hi,

A few months ago I posted a thread regarding a pair of Matrix MX 1200's of which one I had managed to blow (repaired now). So now I've happily got the things running again I guess what I'm looking for now is a little advice on what amp to go for? My understanding is I need a 2400 watt amp (each of the speakers are rated at 600 watt), I would be looking to hook them up to either my mp3 player or computer however I don't know a great deal about this sort of thing. My budget isn't great being student but I'd really like to get these things set up properly, so can anyone point me in the right direction?

Cheers, Rich

P.S. I'd been looking at perhaps a car amp as they seem a little cheaper second hand, is this a viable option?

Re: What amp to buy?

Rich...a lot depends on how the speakers power handling is specified...

600W RMS is a lot different from 600W DIN or worse "music power" as used by many manufacturers.

Another point worth making is that just because they may be able to handle up to 600W doesnt mean you have to have a 600W amplifier to run them with.

Given the stated sensitivity of these is 92dB/W,then you will get pretty decent levels with amps of 100W,and you wont have problems with the speakers unless you thrash the amplifier.

BTW.....what amplifier did you have running these previously?

Car amps.....you'd need a beefy enough 12V supply,and it can be done,bit it's a messy solution.

Re: What amp to buy?

Cheers, that's a big help.

I own a set of Logitech Z-5500's and I'd just had them hooked up as the front satellites in stereo (I'm sure a lot of you will cringe at that but it was only ever meant as a temporary solution till I acquired an amp)
