Hey there all.

Couldn't really find a section to put this in neatly so here goes.

I have a Canton set up hooked up to a Sony STB795 (I think thats the model no' of the Amp).

Basically I am looking at buying a particular DVD, House Of 1000 Corpses, and can get it for the same price, one DTS and one not DTS (Prism release V's Tartan release).

In terms of audio quality, what shoudl I be going for, DTS or standard DVD?

If that is the case, I will simply go for the one I can get second hand but cheaper.

DTS is always my first choice. Bigger sound, with more bass to shake the settee. But that's how I like my films

Most of the time I can't tell the difference between DD and DTS.

DTS for me too on my Marantz SR5200, however my mate has a Pioneer set up and he says DD is better on his amp...........

If you are talking the Tartan Video vs. Prism of this DVD, then go for the Tartan. The Prism not only lacks DTS, but apparently only has DD 2.0!

So, if these are the ones, then the choice is obvious.

Generally speaking, DTS usually has higher bitrates and has the advantage of every channel being encoded individually, which allows for higher quality on the mains and center and reduced quality for the rears, without using up more disc space. Anyhooo, DTS is usually better quality.

Your welcome. Glad I helped.

@MRW: DTS has the higher potential, but as always, it is up to the mastering. Usually DTS tracks are better and DTS support the higher quality. So if you can, choose DVDs which include the DTS track, but the difference usually is subtle.

DTS big time, more dynamic and more volume and better seperation, if only all dvds were created this way.

Higher bit rate doesn't always guarantee a better sound. Dolby 5.1 has discrete decoding for every channel as well, the only formats where DTS has an advantage over Dolby with regards to this are Dolby EX versus DTS ES discrete where DTS is a true 6.1 format where as Dolbys is 5.1 with a matrix encoded sixth channel . DTS does take up more disc space as it uses less compression than Dolby and this in my opinion is the main reason for being superior most of the time. Don't forget the majority of DTS DVDs feature only half bit rate recordings with the frequency response reduced.

Jap Discs tend to have DTS in full bitrate shame we cant follow suite.

With the new formats comeing soon and Dolby useing MLP we should see some high res Audio on the soundtracks and plenty of space to put it on too..

Like all the other blokes here.. I go with DTS whenever I can. I just think the overall quality is better. I've always hated dolby...!

Well when I get the disc, shall give you my own uninformed opinion as to whether DTS is better!!!

Quite amazing really, 6 months ago I would have never of thought of asking such question, indeed neither would I have spent the best part of £3k on a AV Set up. Indeed if I hadn't, maybe the missus wouldn't of left!!!!!


So AV Forums has a lot to answer for.....and ows me a woman!!!!

well i have not read one post that states dd is stronger than dts a few have said they cant tell the difference , i wonder if they set everything up for dts, with my yamaha vs10 i have to set the amp as well as select the dts in the language selection on the dvd menu, although my yamaha will select the best format between dd and pro logic i do have to manually select DTS or i get no sound at all,once it has been selected on the disc.

I would be willing to bet that 95% of people here if played a group of the same clips twice, (DD and DTS) would NOT correctly identify the appropriate track.
That is not to say that "any" differences would go unobserved. Simply that if blind, my experiences have been that almost no-one can quantify those differences to a particular format.

Once again another example (imho) that when done blind, it's nearly always perceptual rather than "fact" as to seperating what is simply different to what IS better.
