Hey guys, it's all been a little quiet over here lately, hopefully this can be read OK, I thought this was well worth posting though, especially as Bryston have been ranked no1 for performance, reliability, tech support and repair issues, I guess anyone who owns any Bryston kit already knew that

A big congratulations to everyone at Bryston, as in this tough market place that is no small feat

In the stereophile of May a review of the SP3 by Kal Rubinson in his column Music in the Round. This is first part of the review, the second one will appear next time.

Reason behind to make it a two part review is that Rubinson is very positive about the SP3.

It is very quiet around here at the moment, is it just that the gobby SP3 owners are now so content there is nothing left to talk about?

I'm afraid you've been misled there! I've left this country twice - once to France with my school (30 years ago) and once to the Munich High End Show last year

I can't afford holidays like most people

Have you heard anything about any promotional stuff Bryston might be doing for their Birthday, James seems to be keeping quiet?

cheers

I must say, Alpha10, I was beginning to be concerned that the thread was about to be demoted to the "page 2" league...

thank you for saving us...

Note to self, must start thinking of SP3 topics to discuss.

Could you find out some prices on the 240 volt 50Hz BIT versions which are BIT-4, BIT-8 and BIT-16?

Only out of interest of course

Cheers

How about discussing how well it's integrating with your room in the absence of room EQ? Interesting

No, I'm a Devon boy, but married a girl from Cornish stock...

Although my dad was a Royal Marine, so I do know the quarters.

That is going to be the most facinating part of Kal Rubinson's review(s) as he is THE biggest room EQ man...

I am hoping that they are going to release the combined SP3/BDP iPad app shortly, that should be worth talking about. There is also going to be a BDP release in the next couple of days complete with the MAX2 interface..

Cheers

I am looking forward to the app as well, the wallet police are resistant, so I am going to use it as the reason for buying an iPad3 The combined app will be perfect for me, can't wait...

They are in Beta testing for the the new BDP software so shouldn't be long.

Cheers

After reading that review and with comments like -

'This was the first time in a very long time that I had enjoyed convincing multi channel high resolution sound without digital processing, chalk it up to the excellent analog signals provided by the Oppo, but also, in no small measure to the Brystons SP3 utterly transperent sound'

I feel I should explore using the multichannel outputs a little more from my Oppo 95, I know when I used to have my Susano I much preferred the Oppo doing the decoding but since I got the SP3 I have been more than happy with it's performance over HDMI, time to have a play I feel, maybe I'm missing a trick here

Had a really nice suprise in the post yesterday, a beautifully presented Ltd ED 50 page hard back perfect bound book celebrating 20 years of PMC

Coming from a print background it is clear to see how much effort has gone into producing this book, it's absolutely gorgeous with some fantastic pictures and imagery.

I'm now hoping for something similar from Bryston this year to celebrate their big anniversary to make a matching pair, how about it James

Hi Vipers,

I wonder if some of that was about Kal's preference for using room correction, even with stereo & music? He seems to like digitising his audio, which I try to avoid.

Many of us have found analogue multi-channel connections to work well. This puts the onus on the player for speaker management and DA conversion, leaving the processor to handle switching and volume control. I'd be interested to hear how you get on with that comparison, but I do wonder if the SP2 can't do the same thing?

BR, Nick

Anyone know why there's no EQ on the Bryston SSP3? And don't say "because it doesn't need it"

For such a high end piece of kit, you would have thought this would be a minimum inclusion? I'd love to have a listen to one

I think, like video upscaling, it's something that tends to progress quite fast, so omitting it removes the possibility of that feature going out of date and rendering the processor less desirable. Obviously an offboard room EQ system can be added, and as such, can also be upgraded to "keep up".

Here is a quote from James that will hopefully answer your question Matt.

'' If you mean digital room correction through EQ the problem is that it totally screws up the direct sound vs the reflected sound coming from the speaker.

When you listen to a speaker in a room you are listening to what we call the ‘power response’ and you hear all the direct sound as well as the reflected sound mixed together. When you alter the direct sound at the speaker using EQ it totally changes the relationship between the direct and reflected sound and is a disaster when it comes to time smear. That’s why a lot of these types of EQ products try and average the curves as they are attempting to negate to some degree of the problem. Having a spot in the room which measures flat frequency response but everywhere else in the room measures like crap is not a good result in my opinion. I think you are much better off adjusting the speaker location and using proper room treatments. If all else fails maybe some EQ can be used but I would recommend keeping the correction only for the very low bass frequencies.''

Hi Nick,

As you know, since owning my Pioneer LX91 and spending much time comparing analogue with HDMI I have always prefered the presentation from analogue from the various players and processors/receivers I have had in my system, but I have been so impressed with the performance with HDMI since installing the SP3 that even though I hooked up the analogues from the 95 I haven't bothered trying them, sounds like I may have be missing out on something a little special.

I'll keep you posted
