Rotel vs Arcam multi-channel poweramp

Hi people,

Need some advice about an upgrade I would like to do.
I'm thinking about getting me the Arcam AV888 pre-amp/processor.
I already have the Rotel RB990BX stereo poweramp (2x200W).
Two options here (I play 5.1 surround):
1. I get me the Rotel RB993 3-channel poweramp (3x200W) additional.
2. I get me the Arcam P777 and use it bi-amp on my large frontspeakers. And thus I sell the RB990BX amp.

Which option would you advice me and why?

Not sure what to advise between the two options but have you considered the Arcam P7? How different is it to the P777?

Is your main interest in music or movies? If you're after crash-bang-wallop, then get the biggest multi-channel amp you can get, but if you're after the more subtle things, go for something more stereo-oriented.

I have quite a collection of amplifiers at the moment, and there's one that I always come back to - the P7. I keep trying others, hoping to find the one that's perfect for me, but it doesn't seem to exist. My cost-no-object preference so far is Bryston, much to my surprise, but thats too expensive for now. These days the P7 is great value, and I doubt you'd get a proportionate improvement in performance from a P777.

I did used to have a Rotel power amp, though not the 993, but from other people's comments comparing that with amps that I have tried, I expect you'll find the Arcam a step-up for music use.

BR, Nick

Re: Rotel vs Arcam multi-channel poweramp

Hi

The P777 is a fanstatic amp last month i did a demo using one to Biamp Kef Reference 203/2 the customer purchased the P777 when he got home it home he did a A/B with his P7 and he said there was a big jump in performance

I must say when i wired up the P777 in the demo room i was amazed of how good it was and we did the demo with a Bryston amp as well which is some going

Both, stereo and surround. I want the clarity, transparancy and subtle detail in the music, but also dynamics and a full bodied sound.

Re: Rotel vs Arcam multi-channel poweramp

Question: what is the significance of the peak current. If one amplifier has a peak current of 30A and another of 120A, what does tell me this and what does it with the music?

And a same kind of question for reserve capacitance (?).
One amp 140.000 uF for seven fully seperated channels (meaning 20.000 uF per channel?). Other 60.000 uF for 2 seperated channels (meaning 30.000uF per channel?). What does this mean for the sound?

Re: Rotel vs Arcam multi-channel poweramp

How about a Rotel 1575 class d amp? 5 x 250w 8 ohms or 5 x 500w 4 ohms.
