Help with my little project

Hey fella's,

Basically I'm planning on toying around with this little project.

How to hook up a car subwoofer to your computer or home theater system | eHow.com

Doing it because I've already got all the spare parts so it should be free for me.

-My Question-

In step 2 where it explains how to calculate the max amps on the 12v rail it makes it seem like powering a decent mono amp around 500 watts would be kind of tough.

The amp I'll be using is the Memphis PR1.500 which has an RMS ratting of 500watt @ 1 ohm and a max output of 1000watts.

So assuming this is based off of the RMS rating I'll be looking for 40 amps @ 12volts.

Would I be able to use 2 power supplies and just splice all of the 12volt rails together?

If the amp is trying to pull more power than it's being provided from the PSU will it just not be as loud? or will it possibly destroy some of the components of the PSU in trying to pull more power?

I have no idea in this context, but the usual result of pulling more power than a PSU can deliver is destroyed PSU components.

Thanks for the response.

So any idea if I'd be able to use two power supply's to power one amplifier?

I don't know why it wouldn't work as long as I just used the 12volt line.

when you say power supplies- assuming your talking about a linear (transformer based) supply-you cant use 2 ac-dc circuits in parallel.
you can use 2 transformers in parallel.
and you cant use 2 switching power suppies in parallel.

one option-if you cant get the required power cheap enough is to use a 12v battery for your amp and a standard battery charger from the wall- it will last a surprisingly long time before needing charging.

switching supplies are generally cheaper-but limited in max output.
