AV preamp

Hi All,

I'm new to the groups so Hello My name is Nick.

The question I have is I'm looking to get a surround sound preamp or receiver. I want to use external amps though. I have been looking around and I have found there is not many option that have all the preamp outputs.

So I thought I would pick your brains LOL.

So What is a good receiver or preamp that does 7.1, sounds good and has 7.1 pre outs. I would rather have a preamp the a receiver since the amps in there would be wasted space.

I have been looking at outlaw audio's 990 and 970. But I was wondering if there was anything available and decent for 400 dollars or less?

Thanks for the help,

Nick

Re: AV preamp

Hi Nick, welcome to the forum.

You may not have realised but this is UK-centric forum, but that is not to say that we can't help you out. Plenty of folks here have experience with US kit .

You are correct to say that not all receivers have pre-outs for use with separate power amps. Given that you want go down the separate power route, I don't see the point in buying a receiver, since you'll be paying for amplification that you don't need.

All pre-amp/processors have pre-outs and most, if not all, modern ones have 7.1 channels. I'm not familiar with the Outlaw kit, although I know the name, so hopefully one of the other members who hang out in this section will be along with some specific product advice for you.

HTH.

Re: AV preamp

Hello Mr Orange,

Yep I did realized it was a Uk forum. I don't mind at all. I figured that most of the stuff sold here would be very similar to what you have there.

So I guess that outlaw doesn't sell across the pond then. I first heard about them on Diyaudio.

But I think I am going to stick with the outlaw 990. It's a very good unit and for 700 usd you can't go wrong. I have been checking out the reviews and they all seem pretty good.

Take a look and let me know what you think.

Re: AV preamp

Unfortunatley Outlaw are not well known in the UK, I would advise a listen against others at a dealer if buying new

I'm in the US and run an Outlaw 990 and love it. I have ran Denon, Rotel and Lexicon in the past and am much happier with the transparency of the 990. For the money there is not anything that can even come close. The only other thing I might own is Krell but I cant afford it.
