Which speaker switcher??

Hi

I want to amalgamate my hc and hifi systems.

When I watch film I want the Onkyo 875 to fire all 5.1 channels.
When I listen to HiFi I want the Quad amp to fire L and R channels.

Mark Yudkin recommended either Sonance or Russound.

I rang the UK distributor for sonance and he ended up recommending me a QED SS20 which is actually for running 2 sets of speakers from one amp, but said I could reverse wire it?

I rang a Russound dealer and he ended up recommending me a Speakercraft SL One that automatically detects which amp is on.

Anyway, neither of these are products that Mark actually recommended and so I'm even more confused now

Can anybody recommend a good quality audiophile speaker switcher, or pass comment on the above two products?

Many thanks

Re: Which speaker switcher??

I stand by my recommendations, which were for automatic switches. Running a 1:2 switch in reverse will work if it's a pure switch (no means of driving two speakers simultaneously) and has break before make - you will have to check. If you want to go the mechanical route you could also just as easily pick up a no-name manual 2:1 switch for beer money from an electrical supplier.

I didn't list Speakercraft (or Xantech) as they aren't sold where I live and therefore I have no personal experience of the kit's quality and no idea of the price. From a functional viewpoint, the Speakercraft SL One should be fine as an automatic switch.

Re: Which speaker switcher??

Any reason you just don't run your fronts through your stereo amp using unity gain (or similar) and actually use the power amp in your Quad - which are probably better than the ones in the Onkyo. It would save messing around.

Regards,
S

From his sig "Quad 99 CDP2s, Quad 909". The 909 is a power amp, the CDP2 has a built in volume control and therefore can connect straight to the 909. To run the Onkyo's fronts - he'd need the 99 Pre.

Thanks. Can't seem to find anybody in this country who can actually offer advice on Russound or sonance, as I said they just seem to try and sell me something else instead (which maybe just as good for all I know)

I have found an online company that sells the Russound product below. could you kindly confirm that is what I need?

CyberSelect | Russound automatic A/B speaker switch

Re: Which speaker switcher??

The Russound reference is correct.

Re: Which speaker switcher??

Hi Chaps,

Done this loads of times with 4 x 12v changeover relays.
The 5 pin automotive ones work well.
You can turn on a 12vpsu (via A SWITCHED OUTLET ON AMP) and onkyo amp is connected to the speakers, turn psu off (relay coils off), and the normally closed contacts connect the hifi amp.

If you get stuck, give me a PM, and i'll sort you out a schematic or even the bits to do it.
