Now I have owned this amp for nearly a week now and luckily enough plenty of time to play and listen to how this new power amp performs, just some back ground to what I have owned and listened to in the past, I have owned quite a few Pre/Pro Lexicon / Meridian / Parasound and a few high end Integrated AV amps and more or less settled on an all in one solution as I felt that the performance gains were minimal when running the speakers that I own, which are M&K S150THX speakers and crossed over at standard THX recommendation of 80Hz, so all the low end is taken care of by the sub, this takes a lot strain away from the amp and therefore THXUltra2 spec AV amps have no problems powering them, and this has worked well with great results and superb movie performance.
The new ROTEL RMB-1575 comes in 2 finishes Black and Silver with black being my preferred colour, as in most Home Cinemas black can disappear when dark much easier, although the silver is a lovely finish too, and if you have your kit on show then it certainly does do justice to your system and credibility on looks, the only negative point on the looks is the power button which has a seriously bright blue halo affect light around it and when on it can be quite distracting, I think this will annoy quite a few people with light controlled rooms, this is just a small negative point though and can be resolved by covering the button or hiding away in the AV rack, the rest of the amp is finished to a very high standard and certainly looks high end, at the back of the unit you get unbalanced connections and a 12v trigger switch so can be linked with a processor to power on, they have omitted balanced connections and this obviously keeps costs down but tbh I do not see this as a problem as most connections are RCA anyway and only really require balanced when long runs are required, the binding posts are of high quality and gold plated connectors are used for them and the RCA too.

The amp comes in at a relatively low weight of 11kg which for amps is featherweight compared to others, I have owned Lexicon and Parasound in the past and they are very heavy compared to the ROTEL, the reason for such light weight is down to this amp being class D which is also known to some as Digital, and I believe this is the first multichannel amp for ROTEL to use this technology and for most hifi audio purists this is frowned upon, with class A/B being the common and widely used amps of choice.
Power wise this amp has huge amounts and is rated at 250watts into 8ohms and a staggeringly high 500watts into 4ohms, and considering its weight is quite hard to comprehend as usually for this sort of power you are looking at 30kg plus!

Moving on swiftly to the most important part and that is the audio performance of the 1575, I have a lot of material for use and also quite a few sources to play with, BD and DVD is taken care of by the superb Oppo BDP83 and this is considered by many as a reference player which also is the first universal player and SACD / DVD-Audio can be played too, I own lots of these with preference being DVD-Audio for audio playback and also CD, I am using an HTPC for movie use too but can only use LPCM and standard DD & DTS on the HTPC, I am using the Onkyo 905 AV amp as my processor and it can handle all the new HD audio formats and also SACD DSD and LPCM for DVD-Audio and the usual vanilla flavours DD + DTS.
My first selection of films I watched were ones that I am quite familiar with, these are Titan AE and the Incredibles on DVD, I am used to watching these films as they have cracking sound mixes with lots of LFE and effects galore, the ROTEL really did do them justice and the sound was string tight and effects moving swiftly around my 5.1 setup and it did not feel strained at all with my Onkyo playing at -5db, it was not fatiguing and no hardening of the sound at this level, I felt that the Onkyo did not quite match this amp at these levels with the Onkyo possibly sounding strained compared to the brute 1575.
Most of my listening is with the new BD format and these containing both Dolby True HD and DTS HD MA soundtracks, now with these formats the soundtracks are lossless which is considerably higher bitrates than the standard compressed DD + DTS tracks and therefore they are more dynamic in nature, this is where I was quite literally staggered at the difference this amp does make to the sound and with 2 movies that I really enjoy watching are the Dark Knight and Iron Man which have incredible sounding mixes, my M&K’s really did come alive and the soundstage was huge with panning and effects really jumping out at me, explosions were so much more composed with the speakers starting and stopping at lightning quick levels, I just sat through these films with a huge grin on my face and quite shocked at how much difference this amp has made and just shows how good the new lossless soundtracks are in comparison to DD+DTS, it’s not to say that DD+DTS are not good enough just that the differences with the power amp are less profound.
Luckily my love for audio is not just based on movies but for music too, and at last I have back in all its glory DVD-Audio and SACD since owning the Oppo universal player and my big collection have had a new lease of life, and once again the ROTEL power amp has boosted the performance and listening pleasure that these high resolution discs offer, again the soundstage is a lot larger than before and the music has more rhythm than the Onkyo could offer before it and subtlety’s in detail coming through and my S150’s do actually play music quite well and my feet were tapping to the music, it is so good that I just keep on ordering new discs!! So not so good for my wallet.
I think I shall stop here as I have rambled on for some time now but my closing thoughts for this Power amp the ROTEL RMB-1575 which retails for approx £1700 is that it is an absolute bargain and certainly shows what a digital amp can do, it has oodles of power which does not get hot and is dead silent in its operation, I can also say that if you are looking for a new power amp then this is more or less the perfect choice!!
