Can't believe no one has mentioned We Were Soldiers. R2 DD standard.
Whether you like the movie or not it has a phenomenal soundtrack.
Probably rate it as my favourite DVD for sound demo - out of 250.

You'll love the dts version then.
What about some of the old restored films?
It's not all about CGI and multi-channel, room shaking audio!
Lawrence of Arabia, Singing in The Rain (SE) and Ben Hur put a lot of the new stuff to shame in terms of picture quality (and as films in general of course!)

Evil Dead 2 - Region 1 (Anchor Bay) 5.1 - is a fantastic mix and really delivers the scares. The bit where the characters are following the sound of the ghosts flying around the cabin really feels like there are spooks flying around your room - highly recommended! Scared my 15 year old sister twice in the space of seconds.
Attack of the Clones (region 1) - an all round brilliant 5.1 EX mix.

He might not be everyone's cuppa tea but Robbie Williams Live at Knebworth DVD has great sound and picture, especially the DTS track. Standout tracks.. Opening/Let me entertain you. Monsoon. Come undone. Kids. Feel. Video mastered on Hi Def equipment is very clear even when on large pj screen.

I'll second the robbie williams knebworth but I think it doesn't hit its stride until Mr Bojanges. No Regrets and Feel are stunningly well performed. Might also try The Corrs Live in London, especially the acosutic set. For the sake of me I do not know why these bands do not sell better here in the States.

I agree with Kevo (News of the World)
Say:-
JAWS R1 DTS lovely soundtrack, all the nuances come alive and a breath of fresh air for a classic, although not an agressive rear surround movie which you'd hardly expect from a 1975 pic.
DUEL R1 DTS likewise and with great ambience for Spielberg's 1971 Movie Debut
FOR YOUR EYES ONLY R2 DD: Dynamic, Acoustic, Ambient and Agressive all at the right scenes from 1981
QUEEN 'WE WILL ROCK YOU' R1 DTS or DD THX: Great stuff, vocal clarity, warm bass and channel separation highlight this Award Winning 1981 Concert DVD

Up until a month ago, I hated music dvds in 5.1 - poor sound quality.
I then heard Jean Michel Jarre - Aero which contains a CD and Music DVD in Dolby Digital and DTS. The DVD picture is simply a close up of the eyes of a French actress listening to the music but the sound is absolutely AWESOME. You have the option of turning off the DVD pic and listening to the music.
Turn off the pic - turn off the lights and be prepared for a sonic treat! Even if youre not a fan of Mr Jarre you will marvel at the effects!
Enjoy!!

How about the sailing scene in The Thomas Crown Affair remake with Pierce Brosnan. Just love the way the sound moves around the speakers and the mixture of sounds - sea, wind and rigging. A real test of amp and speakers.

I've just got hold of a copy of "The Calibrator"
http://www.discshop.se/LIVE/shop/ds_produkt.php?lang=&id=40340&&ref=
It's like the THX calibration tests on some DVDs - but seriously beefed up. Full range of DD, DTS, etc tracks. Excellent screen calibration, too.
The movie samples that are included are very good - of course, it's always better to use your favourite film, but you can't beat this disc for making sure your whites are whiter than white :-)

Imagine all your favourite Beatles songs in DTS. Yum! Or, if you're a purist - LPCM Stereo.
What they've done with these discs is amazing - they've cleaned up the stadium concerts fantastically. Screaming fans in all of your surrounds and the Fab Four at the front really make you feel like you're in the middle of Shea Stadium.
The studio based songs have been completely remastered. Stunning placment of all the instruments and vocals let you hear the songs in a clarity that blows everything else out of the water.
Picture quality is variable. Naturally some of the film taken in the 1960s is very grainy and dirty and some of the contemporary interviews look like they've been filmed on Long Play VHS. But on some segments the quality is supurb. The promo films for "Rain" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" litterally look like they were filmed yesterday.
If you like your music - you'll like these discs.

Speaking about Top Gun special edition there is one part that as some dialogue panning removed; for the reason I’m not sure about, thank heavens I still have the 2000 edition and though the film framing is wrong to being it was shoot in super 35 flat lens, this exposes the whole frame negative and then later anamorphic prints will be made for the 2.35:1 scope ratio.
The two versions that is now available on DVD; well what can I say both stick?
I get really mad when I and the other paying consumer is taking for a ride, now I would not writing this if the re-recoding mixers hadn’t botch it up, but still I’ll run the DVD now and then, any way the scene I’m reefing to is where maverick and goose are waiting outside the co office and the air traffic controller is shouting?
In the original mix the dialogue plays like this…
First the dialogue is positioned in the centre for few brief moments then as the camera moves to the left and tracks across to the right following a young lad carrying a try of hot coffee, the dialogue from the ATC is panned to the right and has he exits the office and walks right-into the hot coffee, the dialogue is centred positioned, then as he walks of to the left the dialogue panning as he’s shouting down the corridor.
So if any of you have both versions do and A&B test of the scene, as for the rest of the films mix some new sound elements have added that perform well with the type scenes playing, other than that I rate Top Gun special edition 4 for sound :thumbsdow and 4 for picture. :thumbsdow http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0002WZTOI.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Lots of good selections in this thread.
Daredevil, while maybe just a little better than average movie, has close to reference quality audio IMHO, particularly the hospital scene, where after the injury, the character grasp's with his tweaked hearing capability.
For strictly demo purposes there was a R1 reissue of the Mask of Zorro. This disc had a DTS track...but what I like to use is the attract mode/intro. On dvd startup, the Zorro char walks from one side of the screen to the center and slashes the screen, the audio for this is in pcm so one of the default dsp modes will usually have priority, for one new to HT, this actually sounds quite good(dpl2-c for me). Once the movie starts the same sequence is now played in dd5.1/dts. As most of you here would know the difference going to discrete audio tracks can be dramatic. Most of my friends, relatives, colleagues. auditioners now understand why at times I can be so anal about movie audio tracks! :god:

Going form Dolby stereo 4:2:4 analogue to Dolby digital 5.1 or 5.1-EX or sonic overhead whole can be very involving…like “we where soldiers” placing the height surround loudspeakers using multiples fixed to the ceiling…then re-plugging the surround-EX that’s of course you can do it on your AVR…
As I have the capability for doing his…at present APOLLO 13 dts laserdisc THX and DAYLIGHT laserdisc dts THX where being played last night with…upper centre channel…?
And sounds fantastic…and with a little know and extra Dolby pro-logic decoding re-plugging I can get 13.1 channels and for less than what someone would pay for there AVR….
Think phasing…frequency response…and the way the film is mixed and you can find some interesting and final results…though it’s not true 13.1 it does sound exciting in the whole…
Test films:
APOLLO 13 laserdisc THX dts 5.1upper centre channel
Goldeneye laserdisc THX dts 5.1upper centre channel / crossover side surround?
Daylight laserdisc THX dts 5.1upper centre channel
Saving Private Ryan DVD Dolby 5.1 / dts 5.1middel side surround?
We where soldiers DVD Dolby 5.1-EX sonic overhead whole
Hail Columbia DVD Dolby 5.1 upper center channel
Alien DVD THX Dolby 5.1upper centre channel
A view to a kill DVD Dolby 5.1total surround on opening credits In 5.1?
U-571 DVD Dolby 5.1 five-screen channel
Terminator 3 DVD Dolby 5.1 five-screen channel
That’s just a foretaste of the films that I will use for the experiment…as there is no AVR that will do this and for the cost of affordable for all…
:lesson: So its thinking time…you have to think like a projectionist!

Winged Migration, R1. Fantastic cinematic experience! I'm all for lasers and explosions, but this is something quite different and well worth seeking out. It is simply a film of migrating birds, shot from gliders, microlites, balloons, boats, etc. The photography is stunning and on the big screen you almost feel as if you are flying with them. I had this DVD for months before I got round to watching it and didn't realise what a gem I had purchased. You don't need to be a bird lover to enjoy this, it will blow your socks off. Technically, the colour is vivid, though edge artefacts are obvious in places. This would be wonderful in HD. Highly recommended for showing off the projector to family and friends. R2 version may be called "Travelling birds", I havn't seen this.

I took a pal, who is thinking of getting a HC set up, to audition some equipment.
We went into the demo room and I asked the sales guy to put on something impressive to demonstrate what a good sound system can do.
Have you got Matrix -"no", well have you got Saving Private Ryan - "no". Well what have you got - "I have only got Ice Age".
I thought - bloody hell, a fat lot of good that's going to be.
BUT - yeah, yeah, all you guys out there know whats coming next. The opening scenes were astonishing and blew our socks off.
Is it as good as this all the way through and (I never thought to ask at the time) but are there several versions of this (DTS, non DTS etc)

Which of these DVDs have the best low frequency bass?
Band Of Brothers Parts 6 & 7. (R1 DTS if poss :smashin: R2 DD is very good ) During the Mortar scenes you will mess yourself at referance level - really really scary  makes you kinda glad you weren't there.
oh and if the do try ref level makes sure the street is empty

The Grudge and Boogeyman have some great bassey moments ,Boogeyman gets silly at times there's so much lfe going on, pitty the film is so poor.
Finally got round to hiring the Spiderman 2 DVD against my better judgement. But my wife insisted! :suicide:
It was great fun if not the finest film ever made. With some rather slow and sloppy bits now and then. Oddly the Spiderman scenes were quite believable visually even if the whole concept seemed rather unlikely to this particular pedant. :god:
The surround sound quality was one of the best we've tried so far. But the incredible bass is what really made this film well worth watching! The climbing scenes of the bad guy with too many arms and a poor understanding of physics were the absolute highlights of the whole film! Explosive, crunching and crashing blows that rocked our whole house and smashed theirs to bits! We were ducking and grinning like two big kids! Great stuff!

I'm fairly new to this Home Cinema lark but favourites from my collection for impressive sound and graphics are:-
Movie: Pearl Harbour. (the attack on Pearl Harbour scenes)
Music: Robbie Williams at the Albert Hall. (the clarity of the sound throughout the whole concert is absolutely fantastic). Not everyones taste but the quality is top notch. Much better than the Knebwoth gig, in my opinion.
PS Just one question. Postings on this thread have quoted different regions for films. Is there a difference between the quality of the same film in different regions then????

Star Wars Episodes I or II, as a decent demo? These discs are pathetic transfers to DVD- the bit rate is appalling and it shows. Try Star Wars Episode V if you want to watch a reasonably well encoded Star Wars DVD.

Well i've only have my system for about 4 days now and needless to say i have been rifling through my dvd's and watching the best bits (for sound only - plasma next year) and i must say that House Of Flying Daggers chapter 3 - The Echo Game is Amazing!!! R2 DTS
Also Behind Enemy Lines, chapter 6-8 - DTS R2, also sounds great!
Saving Private Ryan, opening scene is awesome but i only have the DD version and thinking of getting the DTS version. Do you think its worth paying for the DTS version? Is it that much better (considering its like £15) ??
P.S... Nice list!
Regards,
wow oh wow the new demo disc is revenge of the sith R1(though u probably guessed it would be!) the colours! the depth of the image! the SOUND!! ive been demoing alot of HD stuff for the past few years and this would probably fool me into thinking it was HD it is that good! it is the best dvd transfer i have ever seen, even blown up to 6/7ft it still stands out
ok fox/lucas is my cheque in the post yet
another new favourite is "lost" R1 i had a 14gb HD file of an episode and would be really hard pushed to say that the dvd wasnt that far off in terms of quality! :smashin: the 5.1 is nothing outstaning but is better than your general tv show there is some serious lfe at times and it defintely has more time spent on it sonically than some other shows

Yup, the R2 DTS echo game is Flying Daggers is a current favorite of mine (twin MX350s helps) - some good scenes later too.
Open Range R1 DTS shoot out is a well-know demo for subs. Its not that there is any low-down rumbling but it shows what a decent sub will do, even for fairly modest main speakers.
Magnolia R2 DTS has quite a few good sound sections. People were surprised it wasn't raining outside. When it rains frogs, I nearly jumped out of my skin.
An old demo I used was the first 10 minutes of Blade 2 R2 DTS - needs good subs.
Stealth r1/3 dts (i loved it in a fun way;)

lost r1 great sound for a tv show and as near as HD PQ when compared to the HD version!

Well, I got it. Film was okay - fairly cheesy in places and not as 'natural' as I was expecting. Soundtrack was pretty good - not the best, but some of the DD Ex stuff was quite good - especially the jungle noises. The picture however was pretty poor - okay, so it was a decent transfer with little grain and good colours, but the film looked as though it was shot on video - it had none of the depth and consistency of a good 35mm film. It probably was shot on film, but it didn't really look it - that coupled with the amaterish camera work (way too many sweeping crane shots) totally undermined the cinematography and made everything look like a soundstage. Overall, an okay film for £5.99 - one to please the girlfriends, but not one to add to this list IMO.

I think the cliff scene in The Lost Word: JP2 has some loud and tight bass too. It might be top reference quality and not be as good as the JP superbit or JP3 DTS versions. But I think this movie is perfect for a demonstration. The DD track is said to be better then the DTS track on this movie. Anyway, I think the DD track in this film is much better then the DD track of the first movie.
I still hope Spielberg releases a JP R2 superbit version for europe in the near future because the japanees superbit is way to expensive and I think the HD releases aren't for the near future.
Also a movie wich comes close to reference quality is Evolution. The bass can be deep and tight and times. The only thing that bugs me is that the dialogue isn't so clear as the rest of the sound.

Silent Hill..
Awesome sound DD 5.1 DTS
Good Film to
"Xmen The last stand" deserves a personal recommendation.
The sound effects are as good as the visual special effects.
Some naughty moments like the suspension bridge being dropped on Alcatraz will give your sub and speakers a really good workout. The battle scenes following are the highlight of the film both visually and audibly.

The Eagles: Farewell 1 Tour - Region 2. (insert disc 2 and you'll be pleasantly surprised. the detail in close-ups of the band, the lighting of the set and the amazing DTS5.1 sound)
Robbie Williams: Live at Knebworth: What We Did Last Summer - Region 2. shot in HD but downscaled (please release an HD version), picture quality is superb as is the DTS5.1 sound.

Superman Returns for PQ? Have to disagree with that. I thought it was pretty dreadful.

I usually tend to test stuff with Terminator 2: Judgement Day, the R1 Ultimate Edition copy. They don't sell it anymore I don't think, I bought it about 6 or 7 years ago new when it first came out in the states. It was the one in the metal sleeve. I've always found the PQ on that to be great.
As well as the usual ones like Monsters Inc., Gladiator, etc.

Ditto. Whether this was intentional or not I don't care, it didn't impress me as other DVD's have.

That's the other one I was going to mention. :)
That is a great DVD for visuals, as well as the film of course.

On the music front I HAVE to suggest:
Peter Gabriel - Growing Up Live. Great stage and live performance and the sound is phenomenal.
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia, DVDA/DTS. A heavy rotaion in my dems for surround sound (and good ol' CD for the 2 channel system).
In my opinion these are MUST OWN discs...

I'll have to get around to watching that soon. :)
I really enjoy his films, especially Rumble in the Bronx and First Strike. They are two great films.

Nope, not the picture quality, more the soundtrack. I thought the soundtrack was pretty good

I watched The Village last night (R1 - EX). What a fabulous surround effect & score. I guess most of us are guilty of testing our systems with films that make the most noise. It certainly brings a smile to my face. However, put this on and listen when Ivy goes through the woods. Magnificent.

I have to say The Animatrix (as part of my 10 disc Ultimate Matrix collection) is one of the most outstanding DVDs I own
Brilliant, clean picture, no grain. Sharp - just all round fantastic. I think if I ever watched it on "hi-def" my head may explode :p

just watched The Rock on Bluray great sound and a real work out for the sub, best sub bits are when Connery shot the air conditioning box down onto the marines head well good thump and launching of the rocket real good thud as it takes off, also great car sound and bass throught the car chase scene.
Picture is nice and sharp, check out the control room scene where they are planning the incursion for nice greens etc.
equipment used-
Onkyo 805 amp with Monitor audio rs8s 7.1 system (pcm mode) with ps3 and themescene hd80 projector on a 8 by 5 foot screen.

For PQ i would like to add the SD version of Rocky Balboa, no big flashy scenes but the DVD is DAMN sharp on my 42" plasma.... especially some of the fight scenes at the end when he is in B & W except for the red blood...

The Ray Charles biopic 'Ray' really caught me out. One of the cleanest images I've ever projected and a fantastically involving soundtrack - not to mention an absorbing film with some great acting.

Well the UK 1 disc version is possibly the fourth worst DVD picture that I have seen, and the other three are Matrix 1 the original version, Dark Star which is really old, and Led Zeppelin Live which is parts of a film found in an attic.

Best are
King Kong
LOTR
V for Vendetta
Spiderman for 16:9
Bumping this one because I didn't know we had a few already til you guys mentioned it to me.
Anyway, I had a look at the suggestions, I will try to lookout for the title although as far as I know there was no Australian R4 ever mentioned here, haha...
By the way, this might come out of nowhere, but I really think "I Am Sam" has seriously beautiful picture quality.
Is it safe to say that all dual-layer DVD will have good picture quality? Being it uses twice as much data compared to normal one?

Not sure if it's already been mentioned, but HEAT (Alpacino and D'nero) is awesome reference material.
My local independant hi-fi dealer (audioscene) uses it for demo's. The part were they ram raid the security van, the audio blows your socks off. Stunning
