I've just started playing with films on my pc. It has a 12Gb drive and fills up too easily. I was wondering if an IBM 180GXP60Gb from overclockers would be a good idea as a second one?

I would go for Western Digital drives.
Alot of people have named the IBM's to "Desk Star" and from the high number of failures I agree.

Mind you, I have a western digital 160Gb jobbie in my HTPC and it is starting to play up (disk errors on boot and after coming out of standby) It is important you research a reliable brand. You don't want to know what happens when the wife wants to watch corrie and the PC (which is now the TV) refuses to play ball!!!

I have had a number of makes of HD and my latest is a Western Digital 80 Gb 8Mb cache and it has been the most stable of all of then.:smashin:

I have a Maxtor 200Gb drive in mine....perfect and reasonably quiet.
Might be worth looking at a western digital caviar SE, they come with a 3 year warrenty. And they arnt a lot more than std drives. 7200rpm 8mb buffer, have one in my pc at moment its a very nice drive.

I like the WD SE range but unfortunately I've had to RMA 3 over the last 6 months & now another is dying :(
3yr warranty is good but necessary it would seem. Also recommend Seagates.

The last HD I used was/were Seagate one went got a replacement 2 days later that went, replaced that died on start up, got a 4th one and used it till I got my WD.

Shouldn't that be 'Deathstar' :grin:
Also worth noting that IBM do not make hard drives anymore...Hitachi have taken on that task. So the IBM drive you refer to is getting a bit long in the tooth now.
I have used Maxtor drives over the last couple of years and have found them to be fast, reliable and fairly quiet.
Have heard nothing but good things about the Western Digital drives.

while my maxtor 80gb isnt the quietest, it has been going for well over 2 years now, and to the best of my knowledge doesnt have one single bad sector. maxtor gets my vote.

I read that the latest hitachi/ibm drives were really good. Can't remember where the article was mind you. Typical.

The drive IBM sent to replace my 75gxp deathstar is now dying of the same symptoms. And that was the supposedly reliable 60gxp. |In a totally different PC to the original one.
Not sure who to trust these days :(

Stay away from IBM/Hitachi disks !! - I have a dead 60GB drive and a very noisy soon to be retired 80 GB :(
When I rebuild my HTPC, it'll have 2x120GB Seagate Barracudas and my new 160GB Samsung, which I am very impressed with so far......

How often do the hard drives pack up? I must be lucky, I'm on my 4th computer and haven't had a problem yet. But now I'm thinking of upgrading this one to HCPC as it could be cheaper than a stand alone dvd recorder. But the processor is a 500mhz. Will this be a major limiting factor?

For the last 5 years I've gone through various IBM/Hitachi DeskStar drives - 20 Gb, 40 Gb, 80 Gb, 120 Gb and the most recent addition 180 Gb. All have been very quiet, and despite using them a lot (my main PC is hardly ever switched off), I have never had an problems with them whatsoever.

I'm still using a 120mb Seagate which came with our first PC in June 1992. No bad sectors over a decade on. A 520mb drive was bought a couple of years latr, and that's still going strong (also seagate). Apart form the two IBM drives mentioned above, I had a 4gb seagate go down about 6 months ago, which annoyed me as it was the OS drive of my server, and I hadn't got around to ghosting it, and couldn't remember how to configure redhat! My fault though.
Had problems with a Deathstar myself, as have many, many others. I now only use Seagate Barracuda's.

Same here - i run 2 x 80gigs in a raid set up, nice and quiet, resonably quick and above all reliable.

I believe some Maxtor drives are certified for 24/7 use. Apparantly a lot of IDE drives were never intended to be left running 24/7 :eek:
I've had 2 40GB IBM drives fail on me - but still have 2 40GB Fujitsu drives running perfectly well (these were supposed to be as bad as the IBM drives). My seagate drives and WD drive I have had no problems with - the WD does seem to be noisier than the seagate ones though.

In the past i had 2 faulty WD Caviar's in a row so because of that would never buy another WD drive.
I stick to Maxtor now and am just about to upgrade to 120GB serial drive.
