Thats the worrying part - I have no problem with this where, say, an STB has to permanently attached to a phone as per Sky Digital (Euro HDTV content playing back on a Euro set-top box) although this would probably be less to do with protecting WM9 than ensuring that STB's are not sold outwith specific geographic areas, again as per Sky.
But, I do worry that WM9 DVD's may also require the same thing - a WM9 DVD
player attached to a phone line. If T2 is anything to go by anyone trying to activate an R1 disc from outside the US may well find it doesn't play. Buying a US DVD player for R1 DVD's won't work either if each DVD has to be individually activated - it was bad enough on a PC, god knows what will happen if the phone number is hard-coded in the player. Anyone dialling in from abroad will be spotted a mile off - if they can get the player to dial out of the country in the first place! Could probably get around it sooner or later but would probably be a lot of hassle that has to be repeated for each disc.
Theres good and bad elements to WM9. Good for HDTV, bad for DVD copy protection.
We'll see,
Paul
