I'm thinking of buying one but have a question:-
If I had an IPOD with lots of mp3s on, could I play this back through any PC ? For example I currently have a small external usb hard disk - I connect it to a PC and search for media using WMP or Realplayer and can play the tracks back.
One other thing, I assume I can plug it into a HiFi ?

Yeah, you can do exactly the same thing with an iPOD. Just plug it in (the new Windows iPODs support USB 2.0 as well a firewire AFAIK) and it appears as a drive which you can then scan with realplayer etc. By default all the files have really useless names (like 20345.mp3) by realplay should be able to sort them by their ID3 tag so its not a problem.

And yeah you can plug it into a hifi easily enough.

Thanks - well I now have no excuses at all not to buy one ! I see that Apple have an on-line store so they must be as cheap as anywhere else in the UK - plus they will also engrave it for you if you require.

Before you buy hang on for a little while - Apple announced today that they will be bringing out 20Gb and 40Gb players that supersede the current 15Gb and 30Gb players - and best of all they're the same price

Thanks mate - I'll hang fire for a while. I was going to get one of the 30Gb ones so the extra 10Gb is definately worth the wait

I was pretty certain that once you'd transferred files onto an iPod you couldn't transfer them back!?!?!?

you cant officially but there are loads of third party apps that enable you to.

Are the new 20GB & 40GB iPods still the same size as the 15gb iPod - specifically the 20GB one???

I'd hate to see an increase in size!

I recently purchased an Archos Jukebox 20 which I managed to drop and break, I am now looking at the IPOD but am concerned that my PC does not have a USB 2.0 card, I had no problem hooking up the Archos but believe that this was USB 1.?? Am I likely to have a problem with USB2.0 (I don't have firewire so that is, in my mind not an option) ?

Many Thanks

It will work perfectly OK with USB1 - but it will be slower copying stuff to the IPOD.

One further question !
Can the Ipod be used like an external hard disk also ? Is it possible to put data files and such on there as well ?

I've never used mine for this JohnG, but this is what it says on the Amazon website:

Convenient Data Storage
iPod can double as a FireWire or USB 2.0* hard drive for your computer. This allows you to transfer files and applications from your computer to the iPod and take them with you wherever you go. iPod is smart enough to keep your data files separate from your music collection so that they will not be accidentally erased when you are updating your music.

Thanks mate - it just gets better and better the more you read about the Ipod. time to give the plastic a bit of a battering I think !
