D-Theater on 32-incher

Hi all, I asked this question before but didn't get an answer so am trying again. I have a 32-inch plasma. Will D-VHS give a noticeably superior picture compared with DVD on this relatively small screen size? Any advice gratefully received.

I guess you mean will 1080i DVHS pre-recorded D-THeater tapes look better than a DVD on your plasma. I'd suggest the answer is yes. I have not done the dem but I still believe they would be noticeably superior. With a higher resolution display even more so of course.

Hi Bernard,
I've only seen D-VHS on a Cine 9 and it looked very impressive but then what wouldn't.I'll be trying one soon with my Marquee.
There is someone in the plasma section who's has one with a Hitachi 400E maybe he could give you a better idea.
Do a search using "D-VHS" and you should find the thread.

Thanks Baggy. I did look it up, but there's a lot of difference between a 32-inch plasma and a 40-inch. Still pondering.

Normal D-VHS at 4.7Mb/s gives fabulous pictures on any TV set.
At 14.1Mb/s it is better than the maximum of 10Mb/s that is available from DVD. Both speeds give infinitely better picture quality than any S-VHS VCRs, imo. However new D-VHS VCRs are not sold in Europe any more.

Hi Def at 28.2Mb/s is available on US D-VHS JVC machines and they give the best picture quality of all - currently.

To answer your question - finally ! : You will definitely see the difference on a 42 inch Plasma, between the DVD and the Hi Def version of the same source. I believe you would also on a 32 inch (provided it was Hi Def compatable) , but it may not be so noticeable - I have not tried a 32 inch Hi Def TV.

Why wouldn't Hi-Def be so noticeable on a 32in Plasma,as it would be twice the resolution in Hi-Def wouldn't it?

Why would the non Hi-Def JVC HM DR10000EK be any better than DVD?

Normal D-VHS is better than DVD only insofar as the data rate is a constant 14.1Mb/s ,whereas DVD has an absolute maximum of 10 Mb/s, even on superbit titles, and of course it constantly varies on DVD.

Thanks JH. Think I'll take the plunge - actually you can source the HD JVC players over here - Uncle Eric and CRT Projectors import them. When I get one I'll post my findings in case anyone's interested.

I think you can get UK/EU D-Theater decks from JVC Pro UK. Not much info on if there's any difference between them but I suspect at the most it will be a PSU change.

I have A LOT of hi def material and am very confident you will see obvious improvements compared to DVD.

You guys are getting bogged down with resolutions, bear in mind it also has far superior colour reproduction (and more of them) as well as an incredible percieved depth to the image.

(Is it REALLY doing proper motion adopted deinterlacing of 1080i?)

Apart from cleaning the 1080i deck every three seconds (and not being 1080p) I see nothing against D-Theatre! I saw few good implementations (all with PJs) and it definitely beats DVD

Yes the HDL does do it correctly.

And i don't use tapes anymore for HD i run a straight firewire feed from my hard drive. Unbelievable picture.
