Help with wireless network setup

I have ADSL (256 kbs) modem installed via a USB ethernet adaptor to main home PC, and the new built HCPC with a USB wireless 11 Mbps adaptor to the combi-ADSL modem / wireless LAN unit (Zyxel Prestige 650).
I ave both PC's able to access the internet, but just CANNOT get the two PC's to network together.
have tried various routes through the the XP network wizard... but no success.
(Networking is a whole new area to me)

Do yoiu know any good reference sources that might help, as I'm not getting very far with the Windows help or the Zyxel installation manual ?

THX
Steve

Create the same username on both PC's- ie "BOB" with password "HELLO", with the same password. Create a directory on each PC, and share that dir "BOB" on both.

You should be able to see that dir from the other PC.

And if you are running a Firewall you will need to put the Ip / range of IPs that your network has into your firewalls "Trusted Zone"

eg.) for norton with a Linksys router I have setup 192.168.1.1 through to 192.168.1.200 as trusted IPs

not sure how other firewalls would set this up as I only use Norton, but I was pulling my hair out with all the different advice I was getting but as soon as I setup Norton like this I could see the network drives appear - just make sure that both PCs are setup with the same workgroup name (login name doesn't have to be the same)

sorry - should've said what I'd already done

PC names = PC-1 and PC-2
Workgroup on both = HOME
Home PC logon account = Stephen
HCPC logon account = Home Cinema
both accounts have admin priveleges
Some drives shared on one PC

from what I know of networking (sharing disks over our company network and RAS'ing in from home PC to our company network) this should all work...

so, (Nathan) with all due respect (etc..) I can't see how the account user name should affect it. With our network at work (multinational with 36,000 IBM's on an NT network) I can share to all or selectively by designated account name and fix different access perms...
but on the home PC, I'm trying to make it as open as possible and it's finding ZIPPO...
OK... I'll try it !

Steve
but what else - ??????????????

When in a workgroup (ie at home) and not a domain all machines need to have all user accounts if you want it to work and share resources etc. as Nathan said. Domains only need accounts to be set on the domain controller and the ability to change and use stuff is set by the priveledges in your account set by the domain administrator.

OK..
I've done it... only thing is - I'm not completely sure what I did !

Certainly - had to define a IP range in Norton Firewall like you suggested (192.168.1.1 to .254)...
but the MS ICF Firewall doesn't appear to be configurable to the same degree, so will have to install NPF on the HCPC too.

Am appalled at the low transfer rate of the wireless adaptor (11 Mbps)... its RUBBISH
I'd had visions of being able to transfer recording from the digital Sat card from the HCPC to the Home PC downstairs for treatment & DVD burning... but now, I'm not so sure...
I'd estimated a 4.7 GB file to take about 1 hour at 11 Mbps... is this wrong ?
11 Mbps = approx 1.4 MB / sec ?
4.7 GB / 1.4 MB/s = approx 3400 seconds (approx 1 hour) ???

we'll see..

ta for the help
Steve

for the wireless, should I have IEEE 802.1x Authentication enabled everywhere ?

(seems to require encryption enabled... but won't that slow it down further ?)
