New fan for 300w PSU, will it make much difference - any views welcome

I'm considering changing the fan in the psu and wondered if there are any choice options? It's either that or buy a new unit, which I'm loathe to do as my current one is quite young on its legs. Plus the obvious question is why do people buy a whole new unit if a simple fan replacement can cost far less?

You'd probably get away with volt modding your existing PSU fan(s).

Cheap too. FREE :clap:

Be very careful undertaking any PSU mods though. Risk of shock/fire etc...

Failing that, a nice quiet Papst 80mm jobbie should do the trick.

I've been running a 550w Q-Tec for months (in a very power hungry system) for months now - no problems. Replaced both fans with low rpm quieter models & 5v modded them aswell :eek:

Practically silent - well, actually silent from < 4' away. If it eventually cooks itself - it only cost £25/30 odd.

I used a 19db 80mm Papst fan in my PSU, and it's been running fine for about two years now. It made quite a difference in noise level - it reduced by 5db or more.

My db meter was reading 45db (from 0.5m away from front of pc)before the fan was replaced, and after, it dropped down below 40 - the meter only goes down to 40, so it could have dropped the level by more than 5db.

I also cut out the tin finger guard to allow a better air flow and help stop any air flow noise over the guard.
