I few months ago i purchased 4 70W speakers for a modest Sony CD player. All has been working fantastically until a few days ago when the rear sound became all distorted and bass'y.

Having whipped out the grills and had a look all looks fine and when i gently depress the outer ring of the speaker the distortion
receeds somewhat.

I replaced the rear speakers wit the originals and all is well.

Can anyone offer an explanation as to what has gone wrong ?
They were working perfectly for a few months !

Any help much appreciated

it may be a small puncture in the cone, you are possibly closing it when you push it.
Try and have a real close look

Thanks,

Doesnt look punctured and both rear speakers are effected.

Could it be that i have got the polarity wrong ??
Would this cause this effect ?
If so can they be repaired ?

Are you using an amp?

if not, it sounds like you've been overdriving your stereo and have pushed it into clipping and ruined the speakers.

You would be advised to use an amp with high powered speakers as they can drive them easier and are less likely to damage them.

The polarity would not have this effect, the worse that could happen is that they a sucking when the fronts are pushing, or one sucking and one pusing which would just result in lack of bass.

Have you tried the speakers on another stereo?
