I got noise in my ICE ; with the RCAs disconnected from the amp I can hear the CD change tracks/pick up stuff through the front comps . With the engine turned on theirs alternator whine!!
some ppl have recommended the 'muting plug test' but not sure what that is... !
It may be more appropriate to ask the people who are recomending it.
I think it probably means a shorted phono plug. If you connect two of them to the inputs of your amplifier then any noise generated must be coming from the amplifier or up the power cable. It's a way of eliminating the remainder of the signal chain. As lynx said, it would have been nice of your advisers to offer a little more detail.

oh they didn't recommend it to me directly (i did a search for noise elimination on one of the forums and noticed their replies)
did a web search just now and came up with a noise elimination checklist from :
www.ofsoundmind.com/osm/install/noisecheck.html
I think this is basically what they mean.

If i'm reading you correctly that would suggest the possibility of the speaker cable picking up rf output from the changer ?????
As for the alternator, ensure the integrity of all connections and clean everyone. If it's still troublesome you may nned to fit a suppressor.

whats the solution to the speaker cables picking up rf output from the cd player  ... all connections (wrt to the alternator whine ) are secure ; i want to avoid a suppressor as it won't get rid of the problem (merely suppress it) ... i think I may need to have the whole install stripped down and re-done (without paying for it ofcourse since it was messed up the first time!)
How does the changer communicate with the hu ?

through a cd-changer cable. I suppose solution would be to separate the speaker cables and cdchanger cable as much as possible?
Assuming the speaker cable is routed down each side, is the changer cable well clear of the speaker cables, ie down the centre ? (are both speakers affected?)

yes it's well clear . and both speakers are affected.
Sorry. Don't know. I'd need to fart about with it .

yea, I think I need the car stripped down and source out the problem
unfortunately it's gonna have to be the same 'pros' who did the install in the same place as anyone else won't touch it for less than a couple of hundred quid
the joys of ICE
