How do people calibrate their projectors?
I have seen the Avia disk but this is only for NTSC. Is there anything that can be used on a region 2 DVD with PAL output.

You can use the THX optimax found on some THX disks, but these tend to be just for the disk they're on, and often you'll find the drop shadow test doesn't have a drop shadow...
What DVD player do you have? If it has a 0ire setting for ntsc (or a black level setting), then using the needle pulse tests from Avia should be OK as the black level for both PAL and NTSC should be the same then IIRC.
I'm also wondering that if you use PAL60 for NTSC sources, then the black level could be the same for both - anyone know if this is the case?

You'll find the THX optimode on a few 625/50 region2 discs.
However Avia and or Video Essentials is really the prefered method.
There are reasons why the PAL/NTSC issue is a bit of a misnomer with dvd but there has been lots written on here about the issues.
In practice its unlikely you'll have problems using a 525/60 disc for calibration with few exceptions.
Black set-up is 0IRE for PAL , RGB and component.
Only NTSC is 7.5IRE

Apparently Video Essentials is getting a sequel very soon. Called Digital Video Essentials, it's initially being released on D-VHS D-Theatre format in high def resolution for $90, but it'll be released later on ordinary DVD, in both PAL and NTSC, for $30 IIRC.

Japan is NTSC and 0ire, not 7.5ire like the US is. :)
