msn

Ok Had yet another phone call off relative, niece\nephew windows pcs playing up again!

they use them mostly for msn and limewire, and a few more dodgy sites!! done a quick google and limewire supports linux, http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Commu...Wire-247.shtml

Also found this http://www.amsn-project.net/ so thinking as linux is more secure if i set them up to dual boot and get them to use linux just for the internet, then that would save me less visits and fewer headaches!

done a quick bit of reading up, but opinions from real life users of these programs also welcome.

Who knows they even might get to like linux and show off compiz etc to there mates, convert them young!

PS Forgot to mention i have been using linux for few months now, so ok for setting that up onto there pc.

Re: msn

you'd be better off tellin them not to use limewaire as that'll be the source of all your problems.

amsn or pidgin will be fine for their instant messaging needs. amsn is the more alike to MSN but they won't get the latest flashy messaging features than LiveMessenger supports. As for limewire, the previous poster is correct in assuming that this is where the majority of their problems may come from. Without second guessing their reasons for using limewire, I would suggest they stop using it. If they want to download torrent files then I would just use a bittorrent client such as utorrent or Ktorrent(linux) or transmission (linux). Much safer but still depends on what files you are downloading as to whether they pick up malware.

linux is safer as it is less prone to malware infections as there are less available but that doesn't mean they will be immune.

Thank you for your input.

Have got only one of them using limewire now instead of both of them. But teenagers being teenagers she is being stubborn!

RE Your comment about latest flashy icons, writing, features that you get on MSN, after my last visit to sort some problems out had to do a lot of 'googling' to sort a problem out after they had upgraded there MSN. Started suffering from loads of pop ups, web pages opening themselves etc, no virus or malware would detect problem! Finaly found out it was because on loading the 'new version' theres a little tick box that asks if you want to load a marketing setup!

Kids being kids didn't read small print, just hit next next next at least linux would reduce this happening, i wouldn't tell them any passwords

Only way to remove it was by a small special program thats about on the internet, took a lot of research but sorted it.

Naughty MSN! Going to try your suggestions out and see how they like it. Being different from there mates they could show off etc, hopefully this would convert them to linux.
