After the bios and Windows Xp loadingscreen, the screen goes black for around 3/4minutes. Then it boots up XP to log in. Why does it go black for 4 minutes. Is really annoys me and takes a long time to start my pc. I want to fix this but dont know how. I googled it found out it has something to do with networking but i dont know how to fix it, so could somebody be kind enough to help please  Many thanks Kidchop

I would start by installing autoruns.exe (free utility) and see exactly what gets run at start up time. machine could be flat out on cpu/disk or could be waiting for some event e.g. network related.
or you could have some nasties do an A/v sweep and spyware sweeps just in case.

clean out what AVG found first - by far the most likely cause.
BUT don't just click on heal. look up the trojan horse by name. some have very explicit removal instructions which must be followed.
A/V great fro scanning but autohealing can be painful.
if you have to make backups then do so.
After cleaning and you know system is sound turn off system restore and re-enable. bad stuff loves to hide in restore points.

come back if probs with the removal instructions for your trojan. and get rid of thetracking cookies.

bear in mind that your current setup, level of protection (plus your surfing habits maybe) have still allowed this crud in. if you don't want it to happen again you have to tighten up.

defrag your disk(s), run CCleaner
is still slow have a look with autoruns.

also put the /SOS option on at boot (in the boot.ini)

Maybe he should be looking in the BIOS 1st?

It seems to me that the "Fast boot," or "Fast start," or whatever they call it nowadays is DISABLED!!!

Just a thought........think I would be getting the book out for the board and bios and checking the settings in there 1st before even looking at windows.:)

good point- always worth checking the BIOS.

but 3 4 mins sounds suspicious to me...
