Best 37-42" LCD in 650-800£ range

Hi Guys,

I'm planning to buy a 37-42" LCD. Currently, I'm just considering SONY KDL40V3000. I did do a bit of research on V4000 and W series. But they're a little out of budget to be honest.

I'll be using TV mainly for

- Watching sports on HD BOX ( freesat / Sky HD )
- Might buy a Wii soon
- Ocassionally watching movies

My maximum is 800£.

Any help/suggestions greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

If sports, films and no real gaming / PC, wouldn't a Plasma like the Panny PX80 in either screen size be better?

Panasonic 37LZD80 @£700 or less - certainly better than the 40V3000. But v. 40V4000 no info yet nbut price will certainly be higher for next few months at least.

CHRISGEO and vickster, thanks for your responses!

I am planning to watch mainly HD content ( Euro 2008 gonna be on ITV1 HD ! Yay ). So will it not be better if I get a true 1080p TV ( something that PX80 series lacks ).

Also, I saw a nice deal on Samsung LE40A656. Is that a good choice ?

So are you one of the very few (my guess well less than 100,000) who have a Freesat HD box?

Half the games (those not on ITV) AFAIK will be on BBCHD

I am just planning to buy one in a few days. I have no idea if the quanitity is limited!

Anyways, I haven't really read good reviews about Panasonic 37LZD80/85 ( many negative comments about black levels being worse than Sony LCDs ) . Are those reviews not accurate ?

Thanks.

Re: Best 37-42" LCD in 650-800£ range

Plasma boy here.

If you will be watching a lot of SD like freeview then forget LCD and go plasma. Its as simple as that, for SD LCDs still suck ****. What a way to say it, but still very true and I doubt they will ever catch up.

Panasonic PX80 for best value tv out there. 1080p is useless and like weeing money down the drain unless you sit within about 6ft of a 42 inch set. Any further away and your eyes cannot physically tell the difference.

Not much interested in watching SD to be honest. Probably every once in a while if the game is not on any of the HD channels.

Actually, I do tend to sit quite close to the screen. Wierd, yeah I know. But very used to it. ( I don't personally see any point of buying a big TV if you're gonna watch it from far. 25" TV from 5 feet would probably be same experience as watching 40" from 15 feet. I usually watch it from 6 feet. I think we all have a "thing" like this or 2 )

Yomper : Any idea when 40v400 prices will come down ? I thought the model haa already been launched as I saw it in JohnLewis showroom today. I can't really wait a telly any longer :-(

I think I'll go with Samsung LE40A656, unless I come across a really negative review. So if anyone of you have this TV, please do share your thoughts/experience.

Thanks!

Nope it wont be higher I am sure about that.MSRP is 1k which gives the margin for price of £750

Re: Best 37-42" LCD in 650-800£ range

Get a plasma, because you have to know euro 2008 isn't even in 1080p, only 720p. or at most 1080i. Prob 720p. So a 720p resolution will look better on a 720p tv, rather than a 1080p/ Plus watching football on a lcd, there will be some motion blur, not matter how good the tv is 100hz etc, there will be some motion blur. Plasma on the other hand has little to no lag, a huge difference!

I would go get the th37px80 or even the pz85 if you have the extra money and really want 1080p :/

Not keen on plasma because I plan to ocassionally hook up my tv with my macbookpro. And well, I dont' like to watch the telly from far far away

I think now I'll go between LE37A656 and LE40A656. Are there any differences apart from the screen size ?

Thanks.
