Hi,

Planning on doing a WHS build instead of getting a Icy Box NAS.

I'm going to recycle my old HDD for now until I can invest in a large 1TB hdd later this year. So will have inside

SATA - 500 / 320
IDE - 250 / 250 / 160 / 120

It should fit and the motherboard has enough slots but was wondering how will WHS like it ?

If I made my music folder 'secure' and it was 200 GB's where would it put the data ?

Also say I add an external USB HDD to the mix, can I then alter remove it easily or will it be stuck in a pool and unreadable on a normal Windows XP PC ?

Thanks.

Probably a bit late now given your post date, but here's my $0.02 in case there are others with the same question.

On Install WHS needs its own dedicated 80Gb partition. If your music folder, or any data for that matter, is on the same physical drive as the WHS partition is going to be, you'll lose all your data.

If the music folder is in a different physical disk, it will still be there after you install WHS onto another disk.

However, in WHS disks are either allocated to the backup pool of disks, or they remain as any other JBOD disk attached to a PC and has its own drive letter. If a disk is to be allocated to the pool of disk to be used for backups, all the data is lost as the disk is allocated and freed up for backups.

However, you can then use the pool of disks like any NAS and file server and have a shared music folder.
