View Full Version : Why does XP want me to activate again ?
This morning XP told me that there had been significant hardware changes since it was first installed. This is not the case, I haven't changed any hardware in the last year on this computer, so I'm baffled

So has nothing changed at all on your machine, has anything been disabled/re-enabled?
Here's information on what WPA actually checks before it asks for re-activation.

I disabled the com ports and parallel port and one of the network ports virtually straight away and nothing else has been disabled or enabled.

Disabling/re-enabling devices has been known to confuse WPA, though it is quite rare.
I'd just go through the online re-activation process, it'll probably just re-activate. If it refuses then I'd ring the WPA telephone support and explain that nothing has changed, you'll probably find they'll re-issue a new activation code if the online activation failed.
OK just tried the activation online and it went through fine, but it's worrying all the same that it thinks something has changed. I wonder if they only give you a few times that you can reactivate, if so this has robbed me of a reactivation !
i have not had this problem and ive changed ram (ammount and brand and speed) changed cpu and overclocked, changed graphics card and even added cd drives and extra hard drives and i have never had windows tell me that i need to re-activate. how rare is this problem??

I've re-activated my XP over a dozen times.

The amount of times you're supposed to be able to re-activate an OEM copy of XP is 5 times. After that you it should deny your activation request at which point you then have to ring up and go through the hassle of their IVR to get your copy re-activated.

Even if it does deny you activation at a later date (quite rare) just ring up and go through the automated system, only takes a couple of mins.
You could always backup your activation file.
