Hi 1saintly,
As a necomer to Linux, wanting to dump DRM and spyware-ridden Windows, I would like to try Mint, but I have not yet succeeded in booting version 4 from the liveCD, so version 5 is off my radar at present.
Mint 4 tries to start up with my additional boot parameters of "all-generic-ide irqpoll", but can't detect my monitor or video card (even when I choose them from the offered list boxes!). I just end up with a garbled screen with about six unreadable desktops across it!
I will try again, but am currently quad-booting Windows 2000, Windows XP Pro (still SP2:)), Dreamlinux and Bluewhite Linux, so I am getting some experience of Linux and enjoying the change.:)

Ahhh Windows2000 now your talking.
Sorry to hear your having problems with Mint, im fortunate enough to have a Nvidia 7600gs graphics card, so didnt have to many problems with linux, managed to get my resolutions right, but only because i discovered a linux program called 'Envy'. it loads all the drivers for you but only Nvidia or Ati.
Mate is also trying linux but is having trouble with onboard SIS graphics chipset, and also Network adapter, is going to buy a cheap PCI graphics card, Nvida, as its not used for gaming, has also bought a plug in network card, works fine now. It is a PCCHIPS motherboard, must admit not my choice when i build mine!
At least you are able to dable with linux with Dreamlinux and Bluelinux, shall go and have a look at them as must admit not heard of them, but thats the great thing about linux theres plenty of choice, ive played around with 5 or six versions when first stared playing around with linux, lots of formats and reloads, but been worth it!

Silly question but have you tried booting in safe graphics mode. Should be an option on the live cd. My initial thoughts are it is a driver issue for your nVidia card. I think Mint uses the opensource nv driver as a default then you would have to install the proprietary nVidia driver later. The VESA driver should work on boot with any card and screen.

Good idea that about vesa drivers.
Yes linux mint does use opensource, but it also comes preloaded with Envy http://www.albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html
to easily allow you to set up proper Nvidia\Ati drivers
Old Biker John, could you possibly let us no what exact make model your set up is using,?
God i hope you dont come back and say PCCHIPS :god:

Not a silly question Ken.:)
I did try that early on (knowing my XFX 8800 GTS could be tricky to fire up). However, that was before my attempts with 'all-generic-ide irqpoll' and that boot-up stalled without drives being detected.

You are quite right. I forgot to try my 'all-generic. . . . irqpoll' parameters AND 'safe graphics mode' before I moved on to trying other distro's.
Sooo I re-tried with both and IT BOOTED FINE!
Now I need to set up two more partitions for Mint and then I can install it and boot-up in five different ways!

No PCCHIPS here!:)
My sig. should have shown both of my setups with Abit AB9 QuadGT (P965/ICH8R-based mobo) and Foxconn P35AP-S (P35/ICH9R-based mobo), both using Jmicron JMB363 chipsets for IDE/eSATA ports. I have amended the sig to show that the XFX graphics cards use nVidia chipsets. The text is really tiny:( do you think I should edit some items out of my sig and increase the text size?
Or maybeeee - leave it alone and advertise magnifying glasses for sale!
btw you can find Dreamlinux here (http://dreamlinux.org/) and Bluewhite64 here (http://www.bluewhite64.com/live-dvd.html)
